Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Eagle Scout Project Item Drive - Help those in need

My name is Eddie Seitz and I am a Boy Scout at Troop 682 in Hometown. I am currently working to achieve the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. It has been a long journey, but this is like the finale!

In order to complete my final rank in scouting, I am required to lead a project that benefits my community and demonstrates the leadership skills I have gained throughout scouting. I have decided to raise awareness to homelessness. I have decided to organize a drive benefiting Pilgrim Faith Homeless P.A.D.S (South Suburban Public Action to Deliver Shelter).

I will be holding the drive Sunday February 17th from 12pm to 2pm. As a thank you to those who donate, I will be hosting live music and entertainment. Guest MC DJ Nikki from B96 will be giving prizes every 15 minutes, and new and upcoming Chicago singer songwriter Joshua Staar will perform some of hit singles.

Come out and have a good time while doing something good for all those less fortunate then us.

Sorry Eddie, can't support you. The Boy Scouts of America need to change their ways and allow gays and atheists into their organization. You should have picked a project that would get people to boycott the BSA until they change their ways. Hopefully none of the molesting scout leaders got to you during your time in the Boy Scouts. When I was preparing my Eagle Scout project 32 years ago I unknowingly admitted to being atheist to a fellow scout and the next week I was asked to leave the Scouts. My catholic parents did not support me and said I deserved it. The media didn't cover things like that back then so I was out of luck. I will still support the homeless as always, but not the BSA or religious institutions until they stop their biggoted ways.

"Bigoted," you mean. BSA is a private organization and can have these requirements. Go take your bigoted attitude against those with faith somewhere else. And go thank your parents for feeding and clothing your thankless self. Your comment shows you are as bigoted as you perceived BSA and your parents to have been. Hope you can move on with your life.

I've been living my life just fine, thank you, I don't need to move on. I am a proud, free thinking atheist. Sorry I added an extra g, typing too fast. Private organization or not, is no reason to be cruel. I never said I wasn't thankful to my parents for everything else they did for me. Where did you get that idea? I'll take my anti- religion stance every where I go. As the BSA proves, religion does way more bad then good. And anything good that religion can do, can be done without it.

dear nolan... if you indeed are not an atheist and would help the homeless then chose to be a good christen and wouldn't be bashing an honor like eagle scout. You contradict yourself multiple times and perhaps should have proof read before you posted .

I am a proud anti-theist athiest who would like nothing more then to rid the world of religious belief. I never contradicted myself, you should read it again. I'm certainly not bashing the honor of eagle scout, I was up to achieving it myself. There is no such thing as a good christen in my world. I have supported the homeless and many other charities for over 30 years without needing a religion to tell me it was the right thing to do, or worry about being punished after death if I didn't do it. It's called supporting humanity. If Eddie had any guts he would organize all boy scouts nation wide to boycott the BSA until they decide to except all boys no matter what lifestyle they choose.

Nolan,
There are other stories on Patch where I think your comments would be more on topic. Here is one http://patch.com/A-0cD8 and here is another http://patch.com/A-yR7v. In the meantime, you are trolling, sir. While I'm sure Eddie is perfectly capable of fighting his own battles, as the editor, I respectfully ask that you stop harassing him. He's a young man trying to do good in the world. This is not the proper thread for your comments.

Fine Nolan, we are both allowed opinions . Perhaps I did read it wrong , and I am glad you help people out. I just wish you wouldn't choose a young adult who has spent many years and hours to work towards this achievement and try to make him feel stupid or ashamed of an organization that has obviously encouraged him to do good ole fashioned community service . The bottom line is the benefactor of this event is the homeless shelter that is provided by a church ! This young man has courage to reach out to those is need . Enough said, Eddie good luck in achieving the goal to provide those items for the shelter and GOD bless you Nolan :)

Lorraine, I read those two stories when they first came out, and many others nationally. Very sad. I make my 15 year old boys well aware of such things. When they were young they asked if they could join Cub Scouts and I had to say no. I couldn't give the details why, but I just said they are not nice or fair to all boys. They knew I was a boy scout and liked it so they didn't understand. I believe they do now. They are very good boys and I have tried to instill all of the good traits of the BSA into them successfully.
