7-Eleven Robbers Nabbed After Crashing Car Into Tree, Cops Say

Cops nab two Chicago residents believed to be responsible for Sunday afternoon robbery of Oak Lawn convenience store, police say.

This story has been updated to reflect charges filed against two Chicago residents believed to be responsible for an armed robbery Sunday afternoon in Oak Lawn.

A police chase that spanned Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park, ended when two men accused of robbing a convenience store crashed their car into a tree in the Beverly neighborhood.

Clifton Hall Jr., 50, and Clifton B. Moore, 39, both of Chicago were charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm.

Police said that Hall walked into the 7-Eleven store at 10441 S. Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn around 2:29 p.m. Sunday armed with a gun.

Hall allegedly pointed a gun at an employee and ordered him to open the register. Police said that Hall helped himself to money and mulitiple packs of cigarettes, then took off out of the store on foot.

Police said the man ran around the corner to where Moore waited in a light blue Cadillac.  An alert citizen saw the alleged robber jump into a car where the wheel man was waiting, and called Oak Lawn police.

A few minutes Evergreen Park police officer heard the Oak Lawn dispatch and spotted the Caddy traveling eastbound on 103rd Street past Kedzie Ave. Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police gave chase when the car refused to stop.

Police pursued the vehicle with the alleged robbery suspects until the car crashed into a tree near 103rd Street and Longwood Drive in Beverly.

The two men got out of the car at the crash site and tried to escape on foot a police news release said.

Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park police quickly apprehended them and took them into custody. The accused robbers are being held in the Oak Lawn jail.

Division Chief Michael Kaufmann of the Oak Lawn Police Department said that police officers found a gun in the car, along with money and smokes stolen in the alleged robbery.

A witness to the robbery identified Hall as the suspect, police said. The investigation continues.

Kaufmann said it was too early to tell if the men were involved in other armed robberies in the area.

“You do one armed robbery and in many cases you get multiple ones. We’re looking at all aspects,” Kaufmann said.  “It’s not likely they woke up one day and decided to commit their first armed robbery."

Both men are due in bond court Monday morning at the Cook County criminal courts building at 26th and Califonia.

No one was hurt in alleged robbery or subsequent police chase.

I was censored because I suggested we (Oak Lawn residents) petition city leaders to remove Lonestar Steakhouse, Chuckee Cheese, Red Lobster, Chili's, Old Country Buffet, K-Mart, Target, Portillo's, Hooters, etc. and encourage local business merchants to replace these"magnets of crime". Ma and Pa establishments circulate tax dollars back into the city which large corporate franchises do not.
Local businesses tend to cater to local residents rather than give outsider's a place to loiter and create a dangerous environment. The franchises tend to not care about public safety and ignore the flow of unsavory characters that stream through their doors. We get censored by Patch for being concerned for the safety of our residents including the elderly and our children. At least we get to vote for the best Cheeseburger in town on Patch or when a quilting club assembles all the while Rome burns around us.

Careful, AyrLine, your racism is showing.

Besides Jewel, do you even remember what was at the corner of 95th & Western before Portillo's (which is a Chicago-area only chain BTW, owned and operated by Dick Portillo), Home Depot and Target? Three derelict buildings, formerly Jack Thompson Oldsmobile (a business that had been closed several years before GM shut down the Oldsmobile brand), the original Kmart, which had stood vacant since it moved across 95th Street into the old Venture store, and a Holiday Inn that had gained a reputation as a "roach motel" before finally ceasing operations.

Oh and by the way, I just looked at the receipt I was issued at Target. You know what line item I saw after the subtotal? The sales tax, which allows state and local governments to collect revenues from every single point-of-purchase transaction. But you don't strike me as the type to let little things like FACTS get in the way of your rantings. Ask the Oak Lawn mayor (is it still Heilmann?) if he'd rather have the tax revenue a local florist (just using that as an example) or Target.

Oh, and if you think every cent in sales tax Jack Thompson Olds collected went into Oak Lawn's coffers, it didn't. The auto sales tax is different than the retail/point-of-sale sales tax. It doesn't go to the town where the purchase was made. It goes to the municipality where the purchaser lives. Let's say I lived in Burbank (I actually did for a few years) and I purchased a new or used car from Napleton Honda on 95th Street. The money from the sales tax would go to Burbank, not Oak Lawn.

Glad to hear that the robbers were apprehended. Good job, Oaklawn and Evergreen Park Police, and to the citizen that just didn`t turn his head and ignore what he thought was suspect. Happy Holidays to All!

It always helps when a witness will come forward.. Due to their info, the police were able to find and arrest the suspects.. Job well done by citizen and police!

While I have no doubt it is probable these reprobates are multi-time offenders, logically, didn't they HAVE to wake up ONE day and say to themselves "Today I will commit armed robbery and it will be my first."? (Something to that effect...) Still criminals and glad that they got caught, just an odd choice of phrasing for the officer, is all, though a great job...okay, enough rambling.

Thank God for the brave citizen, the diligent cops, and for no injuries. I'd been out here about 3 or 4 years when I heard of the robbery of the 7-11 I always frequent, and panicked, thinking I might have to leave Oak Lawn, because "the dark cloud of city life" was following me. Foolish, I know. Each article I read here only strengthens my faith in suburban's finest as well as witnesses doing the right thing.
Merry Christmas, Oak Lawn.

When some readers can demonstrate that they can discuss public safety issues without using inflammatory or offensive language than I'll think about turning comment moderation off. Oak Lawn Patch belongs to all community members who wish to read, interact and use Patch's many tools for sharing information with other community members. I'll be moderating comments on all police and crime stories from now on but frankly it won't be my top priority. As the editor, I need to be fair to all readers. You can call it political correctness; I call it RESPECT. I thank the many readers who have had contributed meaningful dialogue to the community discussion on public safety. Unfortunately, an increasing number of your neighbors are shouting you down by leaving garbage that it is only meant to inflame the community and hurt people. Anyone who wishes to discuss these matters can contact me at lorraine.swanson@patch.com. I'll listen to any reader who wants to talk about censorship or public safety, but if you're only going to hurl insults at my colleagues and me without offering any constructive criticism your emails will be ignored. Tell your friends and neighbors in Oak Lawn and on the South Side to be respectful and civil when commenting on Patch. This same request applies to the Oak Lawn Patch Facebook page. too. Please review our terms of use, oaklawn.patch.com/terms. And just so some of you know, I didn't fall off the turnip truck and smack my head on the pavement any time recently.

Lorraine, I know it will cut down on comments, but real names are the answer. Everybody is a singer behind a shower curtin, in public not so brave. Attacks will stop with real names. Barney Leifker

I agree, Barney. I like how news sites are now using Facebook to leave comments. I'm going to keep pushing for that.
