Brain Freeze: Who Mixes the Best Shake?

This week, Patch sought out the best milk shake in the Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos area for our ongoing series “Chowdown Showdown.”

Welcome to “Chowdown Showdown,” a weekly feature where we take one type of food and ask readers to nominate their favorite restaurants in Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos. This week’s food in focus was the all-American milkshake. We tallied the votes on each respective Patch site and Facebook page.

We were so excited to dive into our milkshakes that we forget to take pictures. It was a close contest but after sucking our straws inside out we made our decision. Somebody had to do it!

Cupid Candies, Oak Lawn

Palos Patch: Cupid's had the richest shake of the three we tried. It had that quality chocolate taste that was hard to top. Cupid has been around forever and their shakes taste like something that was perfected generations ago. Five Stars

Oak Lawn Patch: If you're about to get your period and need a chocolate fix, then Cupid Candies' double chocolate shake is for you. Our readers gave us a lot of great suggestions--Potbelly's, Rosie's, Portillo's--but the South Side's own Cupid Candies popped up most frequently. Packed thick with Cupid's very own chocolate ice cream and slathered with chocolate syrup we were ready to watch a marathon of the Gilmore Girls. Five Stars

Evergreen Park Patch: Cupid's Candies had the classic chocolate milkshake that you remember from your childhood. The chocolatey flavor had a malt-like taste that was different from any chocolate milkshake I'd ever had before. Five Stars

Wojo's, Evergreen Park

Oak Lawn Patch: Did hell freeze over and pigs start flying--because the Snarling Pig shake from Wojo's was fabulous. The chocolate, peanut butter, crushed peanuts and marshmallow fluff is definitely worth the trip to this Evergreen Park destination spot. Four and three-quarters stars.

Palos Patch: When I first heard the laundry list of ingredients I was a bit apprehensive, but fear not more is more when it comes to milkshakes. The flavors worked well together and the texture of the shake was great. You could taste why Wojo's is a milkshake hot spot.  Five Stars

Evergreen Park Patch: Virtually everyone who gave us suggestions said Wojo's was the place to go for a great milkshake. We even had several Oak Lawners hopping the village line to get to Wojo's! This Snarling Pig was simply divine! I'm a sucker for peanut butter and this frozen treat hit the spot. The chocolate base with peanut butter and marshmellow fluff was perfected by the crunchy peanuts. Five Stars

Tastee Freez, Palos Heights

Evergreen Park Patch: The crunchiness of Tastee Freez's peanut butter shake immediately struck me! It was a nice suprise after such a smooth look. Mixed to perfection, this treat was almost sweet enough to hurt your teeth, but is much like summer in a milkshake. Five Stars

Oak Lawn Patch: You can't go wrong with the tasty goodness of soft-serve ice cream. I used to make tons of these shakes when I worked at a soft-serve ice cream place in high school. Tastee Freez's peanut butter shake full of crunchy peanuts and the chocolate shake were better than the ones I used to make long ago because my co-workers and I were too busy locking each other in the cooler. Four stars.

Palos Patch: This is a classic. Tastee Freez shakes instantly recall memories of warm summer nights and melting ice cream. The texture was great and makes me want to tear into a burger and fries. It's like you are transported back to a 1950s-era diner. The venerable Plush Horse in Palos Park also received some shout-outs. Five Stars

And the winner is ... Cupid Candies of Oak Lawn. Cupid shot us with his arrow of love for this creamy delicious shake. P.S. You don't have to be PMSing to enjoy a Cupid's milkshake.

Are you telling me the shakes at Oberweis didn't make the cut. I find that hard to believe. The chocolate, strawberry, or butter-pecan shakes are so good.

Hi Latisha:
The people spoke and there was overwhelming support for Wojo's so we had to go with them. Thanks for checking in with us.

Trust me, Cupids is better than any of them (especially Oberweis)!
