Business: Sara Lee to Shut Oak Lawn Outlet Store

The store on 95th Street in Oak Lawn and another south suburban outlet store in Homewood will be closing by the end of November.

The impending split of Illinois-based Sara Lee Corp. into a global coffee company and a North American operation under the Hillshire Brands banner, also means the demise of its 11 outlet stores including the longtime store on 95th Street in Oak Lawn.

Peter, the manager of the Sara Lee Outlet store at 5711 W. 95th St., referred calls to a corporate media spokesman but said regular customers had been coming into the store since the news was announced Thursday lamenting its eventual closing.

"We have some pretty loyal and regular customers," he said. "They are disappointed the store will be closing."

The Oak Lawn store carries an extensive line of discounted Sara Lee products.

The closing also will affect an outlet store at 18400 Governors Highway in Homewood.

Matt Pakula, senior manager for corporate communications for Sara Lee, said Friday there was no timetable for the closings but added the stores will close by the end of November.

Pakula said Hillshire Brands after the split would not be able to devote the “attention required for success in stand-alone retail operations.”

Nine of Sara Lee's outlet stores are in Illinois. Each store employs about seven people.

This store closing makes me sad. I like purchasing the market day items here. Soon there will be another empty storefront in Oak Lawn. Sigh!

What about those people that don't have any kids in grade school and likes the products from Market Days.
I would like to see them not to go. It would be really sad.
It is always busy when it come to holidays and on a normal basics too.

Most churches and schools in Oak Lawn have "Market Day". Just go to Marketday.com and you can find out which is closest to you. You don't have to belong to order from them. Just sign-up through the Market Day website. Hope this helps!

That's kinda the boat we are in, Laura. Our guys are all out of grade/high schools. While we hit OLHMS during the school year, the summer Market Days in churches and such have pickups at times we can't make, so we'd go to Sara Lee in the summer.
