Commissioners Stalemated on Cash for Gold

The Oak Planning and Development Commission splits Tuesday on a zoning variance for a proposed Cash for Gold store.

The Oak Lawn Planning and Development Commission wasn't sold on the sheen of a gold-buying store’s request for a zoning variance, deadlocking 4-4.

The public hearing for Midwest Gold Buyers’ zoning request for a special-use permit to open a second store in Oak Lawn was continued to Tuesday night, to give the co-owner and petitioner, Jake Sadoff, a chance to appear before plan commissioners.

According to Sadoff’s proxy, his boss could not attend the hearing earlier this month because he was at a family wedding. Sadoff was a no-show again at Tuesday’s hearing at village hall. The company is requesting a zoning variance for a second store at 6760 W. 95th St. because the area is now zoned for retail only.

MGB store operations director Jerry Lang presented signage mock-ups and photos of jewelry case, as well as a whole new branding concept for an all-in-one store to be named Gold Exchange. The plan was different than the one presented a few weeks ago.

Lang explained that in addition to buying gold, the store would carry high-end costume jewelry retailing for $25 to $35. Originally, the owners planned to start out buying gold before branching into selling fashion jewelry.

The village zoning code does not require a special-use permit to sell gold if retail merchandise is sold. At Tuesday's hearing, it was determined that the zoning code does not specify what percentage of the business must be dedicated to retail.

“You guys wanted to petition for special use because you were only going to start out as gold buying,” Radice said. “This is a way to buck the system.”

Lang said it was a misunderstanding.

“We will have jewelry from day one,” he said.

Pressed on the percentage of MGB’s 70 cash-for-gold stores’ retail sales, Lang guessed that jewelry would make up between 5 and 10 percent.

“It’s a gold-buying store, let’s face it,” Radice said.

In a final pitch, Lang said all of the MGB stores were “high class” and constantly being upgraded.

“We pump a lot of money in villages and neighborhoods,” Lang said. “People get some money selling their gold and are able to go to all the other retailers to spend it.”

Lang told commissioners that his boss didn’t come to the hearing because, “I had already presented in front of you.”

“We just want the right to compete on that side of the village,” Lang said.

Commissioners reached a stalemate in their vote.

The measure is scheduled to go before the village board Sept. 27 without a stamp of approval from the planning and development commission.

MGB’s zoning request skips a village board meeting to allow the commission’s meeting minutes to be approved so village board members can review them.

Should the board grant a zoning variance, MGB’s Gold Exchange store would be the third gold-buying store within a one-mile radius.

How planning and development commissioners voted:

Steve Radice (chair) - No

John Eggert (vice chair) - Yes

Hasan Kishta - Yes

William Kushnerik - No

Bill Lundy - No

Rich Piazza - Yes

Tim Reilly - Yes

Dave Tebo - No

Commissioner Wayne Gray was absent.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Quit opening sesspools like this place in nice FAMILY suburbs. No one is going out looking for GOLD. People who buy jewelry go to actual jewelry stores, not flea bag Cash for Gold rip off joints. Please Commissioners. Listen to what we are saying. Don't you read the patch and all the responses from the people who live here? Remember Commissioners, what goes around, comes around. Watch for the low life scum to move in next door to you, or even into your house as an in-law one day! You vote yes to let a garbage low life business and see what comes around you way. It may not happen right away, but it will happen. It always does. Those who do wrong things always get theirs in the end!

Why would we want 3 gold buying stores within 1 mile radius? Their signage is always cheap looking. Also it looks like MGB is trying to game the system. Suddenly they say they're planning to sell retail from Day 1. I also think these places would be the perfect place for criminals to unload the gold jewelry they stole. I really hope the Board rejects this.

Why do you assume that MGB is a rip-off joint or low-life scum? MGB is actually a family-owned business that prides themselves in customer service. Visit their website. Have you ever been into the Oak Lawn store? It is actually quite clean and comfortable. Their landscaping is better kept than most other businesses on the block. They offered me water, chocolate and showed me their whole process for buying gold. Yes... BUYING gold. MGB does not sell gold, like the jewelry stores you are referring to. When I brought them my gold, I had received a quote from another jeweler. They honored their 10% price guarantee and gave me the most money for the gold that I brought them.

MGB is a family-owned business. This is true. It is also the ONLY thing that is true about this "company." It is a total scam. "High-end costume jewelry?" No. It is a bunch of crap that they buy in bulk. The "1st offer" is a complete insult. When they call their "boss" or whatever line of BS they spout, it is a scam. When they say "new customer promotion" or "well, we HAD a coupon last weekend but I will still honor it for you" --- IT IS A SCAM! Even the "final offer" is crap. It's still WAY below what a reputable company would offer. Oh, and the reason Jake Sadoff didn't show....HE DOES NOT CARE!!! "High class?" HA! They stock the stores with the cheapest computers, TVs, printers, etc. They don't even have phone service in the stores! They require employees to have cell phones and don't even provide compensation for the cell phone bills! PLEASE do not let these people open another store....
