You can't beat fun at the old dog park.

This woman told me to stop holding the dead snake. She picked it up with a stick and threw it into the garbage can.

A dead garter snake was a huge source of fascination for canines and children at Bailey's Crossing, the Oak Lawn Park District's new dog park at 9910 S. Melvina Ave.

Some children found it in the park and asked me if I wanted to see it. It looked like a dog chewed it.

I picked up the snake thinking I could take it home and nurse it back to health, but it was already dead.

Another woman came along and told me to drop it. She picked it up with a stick and we all looked at it for awhile. Then she tossed the snake into the garbage.

Don't worry, there are no poisonous snakes at the dog park.

Later I went home and washed my hands.

I am and always have been deathly afraid of snakes. If I ever see one, my legs completely give out and I go to the ground. I will not even walk in my own yard for fear I may encounter a snake. I can't even explain the fear I have. I have nightmares all the time about snakes. I wake up with terror episodes where my heart is pounding and I have to jump up out of bed. I guess when I was a child and kids found out how afraid I was they would always find snakes and throw them at me. Didn't help my fears any as I grew up. Terrible thing.

I have that same fear of rodents. I don't mind reptiles so much.
