Elderly Woman Injured in Mugging for Cash and Rosary

Police say 87-year-old woman's shoulder was dislocated when she was knocked to ground by the mugger.

An elderly woman was injured after being mugged for her rosary and some change during a purse snatching on March 30.

Oak Lawn police received a call of an 87-year-old woman lying on the ground on near 97th Street and Keeler Avenue and a man running from the scene around 3:25 p.m. Police found her standing up near her car with asphalt in her hair.

The woman said she was preparing to unload groceries from her car trunk when a man suddenly snatched her purse from her hand, causing her to fall to the ground.

Police said the elderly woman wasn’t able to give much of a description because the mugger approached her from behind and it happened too fast. The woman was scraped up and her glasses were also damaged.

The purse contained the elderly victim driver’s license, social security card, car and house keys, $100 cash and a rosary. She described her assailant to police as a male black between 16 and 25, with a slim build.

A neighbor standing out on the balcony of his condominium told police he witnessed the incident through the courtyard. The neighbor said he had never seen the man before. All he could tell police was that he was wearing a dark blue or black hooded sweatshirt. The man also had his hair cut short.

Oak Lawn and Alsip police, along with police dogs, searched the area but couldn’t find the man.

The woman complained of pain in her left shoulder and she was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital. Oak Lawn police stayed with the woman during treatment, where it was determined she had a dislocated shoulder.

She was treated and released. The police officer drove her home and assisted her into her building.

The next day, police delivered a medical prescription from the hospital to the elderly victim. The village was also assisting the woman in changing the locks on her condominium unit.

Chicago has unfortunaely come to Oaklawn. What use to be a very quiet middle class crime free community has become a place for thugs to raise their ugly heads. I hope this lady has a quick recovery and the scumbag gets what he deserves next time he tries this. It would give me great pleasure to catch him in the act next time.

Well, I hope he chokes on It. It's so sad to picture this elderly woman being thrown to the ground. Very very sad to hear this going on!

I hope the lady had a fast recovery. It sounds like the OL police took good care of her.

I hate it when punks prey on people who can't defend themselves. In addition to what the police are doing I think we somehow have to be alert and help others whenever we can so these punks know they can't attack the elderly.

Have to agree with all. It's a shame when these thugs pick on helpless elderly citizens. These criminals have no concern for human life. You can argue all you want about being poor, but when there is no sound morals in their upbringing this will continue. Parents take responsibility for the children you've brought into this world. Also really agree on Hoodie issue...It's known as a disguise for criminals..Think about this the next time your children put one on!! It's not everyone, but why take the chance??

This sounds similar to what happened to my grandmother she just had open heart surgery and had just gotten the okay to drive. Then a couple of days to african american's followed her home from Lasalle Bank and into her garage and beat her
up 4 yrs. ago! I hope they catch these guys! I don't understand how people can be so
mean especially to an elderly individual.

Do you think if she had a gun and used it it would be called a hate crime?

In this state It could be called anything. In this state It's the criminals who have and carry guns. They know how to use them and they would never shoot themselves In the head accidentally. Only the law abiding citizens are a danger to themselves and to others. This woman could have died that day. She could have struck her head on the pavement but luckily she didn't.

So, instead of fixing the problems that make things like this happen, a BETTER solution is to make Oak Lawn the Wild West and escalate the level of violence exponentially...arm everybody...grandma, the kids...why not? ANYBODY COULD be a criminal, right? In fact, we should make training mandatory for everyone, so nobody ever misses. Only a FOOL would not carry a gun at that point...carry them everywhere, court, bars, work...because those criminals COULD be ANYWHERE, right? Where do you draw the line? After I shoot you, or you shoot me? When there is a shoot out in the middle of 95th Street between two groups of people who both 'felt' threatened and didn't think that they should back down? Who will volunteer to carry the dead bodies to the morgue? Tell the families of the deceased how and why their loved ones died? When we trade security for liberty we end up with neither, nor do we deserve them.
If she had a gun, would she have been able to use it? Would it strapped to her hip, cowboy style? So we can end up looking like Florida, inbred and backward?
We need jobs, better schooling, better parenting, higher (not lower) expectations of each other. People with more options more often than not pick the safer, less violent path. The bigger the scope, the less violence wins out. England, Rome, Ottomans...They all had huge empires, but as violent as they got, eventually, they all lost them...the loss of life to hold them wasn't worth it, and people like Gahndi 'won'.
