Independents Band Behind Bury, Phelan Won’t Seek Third Term

Mayoral challenger Dr. Sandra Bury wins endorsements of four independent trustee candidates including two incumbents, who "collectively pledge to put the interests of Oak Lawn taxpayers first."

Trustee candidates have announced their runs in their respective districts for the Oak Lawn Village Board and are endorsing mayoral challenger Dr. Sandra Bury in the April 2013 election.

Restaurateur and businessman Tim Desmond has announced his run in the special election for Dist. 1 trustee. Desmond is challenging incumbent Cindy Trautsch, who was appointed to the seat after the resignation of former Trustee Jerry Hurckes in August 2011. The term is for two years.

Desmond brings "a wealth of real-world business experience to the trustee office as the founder and owner of Jack Desmond's Pub in Chicago Ridge". Desmond is also a homebuilder in Oak Lawn and a stationary engineer with Local 399, according to a Bury campaign news release.

Trautsch is running on Mayor Dave Heilmann’s “Independence Party” ticket.

Oak Lawn-resident Mike Carberry is running in the sixth district for village trustee, where Tom Phelan has decided not to seek a third term.

Carberry is a former 36th District state representative and currently services as the deputy director of acilities management for Cook County. Carberry has the full support of Phelan.

Bury has also picked up the endorsements of incumbents Trustees Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) and Tom Duhig (Dist. 4).

Olejniczak and Duhig, along with Phelan, have stepped up their battles as of late against Mayor Dave Heilmann-led board majority. Olejniczak is the vice president of operations for Dearborn Wholesalers.

Duhig is seeking a second term as the fourth district trustee.

“It’s time to put an end to insider deals for special interests – for lawyers, hospitals, family members, and the like,” Duhig said, who works in the court services division of the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Bury and the four independent trustees have “collectively pledged to put interests of Oak Lawn taxpayers first.”

The mayoral challenger took the opportunity to slam the current village board majority, which includes Trautsch and Trustees Bob Streit (Dist. 3) and Carol Quinlan (Dist. 5).

“Special interests, insider deals, secret meetings and slanderous personal attacks have become business as usual for the current board majority,” Bury said of the Heilmann-led majority.

Bury’s news release did not indicate why Phelan was stepping down.

Tell us what you think of the candidates in the April 2013 municipal election. Be nice.

If he doesn't live in Oak Lawn, he should not be allowed to run

The farce in this article is Olejniczak, Duhig, Phelan calling themselves independent. They are about as independent as Moe, Larry and Curly. They come in a set, and they are joined at the hip and all equally full of themselves and full of crap.

Carberry, " former 36th District state representative and currently services as the deputy director of acilities management for Cook County" MUST be an independent with no ties or allegiance to anybody. Yeah, right.

Sandra Bury is a uni-dimensional candidate. Her thing is (1) Dave is evil, and (2) I'm not Dave. Brilliant. She is big on the whole shop Oak lawn thing, though, since she owns a business. Tim Desmond going to be pushing shop Oak Lawn thing? When they say a Bury campaign release, is that more authored by Tphelan? This next election should be interesting to say the least.

Glad someone is running for 1st district. As of now Jack Desmond has my vote. I attended a meeting where Dave H. presented candidates to replace Jerry and asked for our opinion. Cindy Trautsch was NOT one of those people and nothing I read explained why she was the most qualified . So far, I have not seen her do anything memorable other than be quite (which may be an accomplishment). Also as a resident of the 1st district, I have never met her, heard of her reaching out to residents of Dist1. I tried to contact he and the web site did not have an alternate contact number (cell) and voice mail was never returned. She strikes me as disengaged and too busy --gee lets make the meetings shorter so I can get home and do what I really need to do. In private industry someone who is temporarily holding a position and REALLY wants the job will work very hard to prove they are worthy and contributing.. Showing up at the board meetings, not engaging with the people you serve and not being available does not demonstrate a drive or passion for the job-in my opinion. Also, clearly the current board is not working together for the good of Oak Lawn. Good or bad, I say vote out all the incumbents and start over. If the new candidates prove to be no better incumbents can run again. Oh...and send them all to the best team building camp we can find and a couple of "play nice" seminars before the 1st board meeting.

Sorry- Jane can stay.....and has my vote. Like a good team player, she plays well with others and supports the decisions that are made to execute and does her job without any apparent hidden agenda. I think there was a quote that says debate the decisions during discussion ..but once the decision is made execute like it was your idea.

Jack Desmond's Bar is a hangout for Illegal workers aka No Green Card.
Unfortunately, she only "played well" with the Thugs, and did their vicious bidding.
Her's another quote:
Be careful the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them.

Isn't Mike Carberry the same guy who filled the 36th Districty seat for 6 months, only to get a $90K a year job with the county for his efforts? I wonder what HIS agenda is for District 6 or will he be working for Phelan?

Doe's Mike C. get a pension from that 6mo. stint? I think Phelan got a deal with Mr Madigan for dropping out and letting Carberry in. You can bet he was woking behind the scenes, b/c he knew he made too many enemys with residents and couldn't win.

Christy,
Your thinking is really on the money. The best thing to happen in this coming electionis to vote out all the incumbents. They are like little kids arguing ith their toys. We need some fresh blood that can get along for the good of our town. We used to have some input when Ernie and his side were in control. All the trustees only worry about their selves and their bragging rights.
Our family has lived in Oak Lawn since the mid 1940's and after we were married we bought our home in 1973. I have 7 brothers and sisters who all live in our town plus many aunts and uncles, cousins and inlaws. We are all getting tired of the fighting and coniving and will vote to any new people that will promise to work together for the betterment of our town.

Quote from above: “It’s time to put an end to insider deals for special interests – for lawyers, hospitals, family members, and the like,” Duhig said, who works in the court services division of the Cook County Sheriff’s office." Without even going into the patronage it takes to work for the sheriff, let's review, shall we?

Insider deals like ... oh, let's see...the Querrey & Harrow deal to your buddy's buddy Stillman, that you voted for. Like the $25,000 to Odelson & Sterk for a bogus "investigation" of the former attorneys, obviously intended to take a shot at the mayor? Like the $500,000 to Phelan's Wisconsin law firm buddies at Godfrey & Kahn to further "investigate" the former attorneys.

Look, Mr. Duhig, wake up! Literally. Phelan has stated out loud that his number one goal in life is "to take down Dave Heilmann." This is the kind of guy you hang with? There's a life's dream. But wait! There's more! You hang with another guy who solves his problems with another trustee by punching him out. Maybe the label Three Stooges is the right one. So, Carberry would be Shemp?

Phelan did all of the research for Odelson's entire investigation regarding the attorney's fees. TP did all the digging, information came through him. He's had two other attorney friends firms working for the village since he stepped in.

I must agree however that this is a great day for the people of Oak Lawn because Tom Phelan is gone! No matter who wins in the district, the people of Oak Lawn will be better off

so it is official: Andy is surprised that Tom isn't running. No, wait he knew all along and supports Carberry (A union backed government employee who took a state rep spot for six months and voted for the largest tax increase in the history of Illinois). Yet Andy supports him because the Mayor doesn't! Sound logical thinking young man, you should have at least have been a manager at Walgreens before you joined the take from the government crowd you so despised. What's that word you use......hypocritical!

The story listed before this one shows Oak Lawn home sale in November 2012 up from 2011; 21.2% . Medium price up from $145,000 to $160,160 in the same period. Zero comments. Instead we have read campaign attacking crap from our Oak Lawnians. Not a single comment about Oak Lawn rebounding. We own a stake in Oak Lawn protect it, quit disgracing it behind a fake name on here. Lorraine I hate to repeat myself; no real name, no post. Barney Leifker

I won my bet!! I said it wouldn't even take a day for one of the Mayor's supporters to bring up the name Madigan and his alleged ties to anyone who disagrees with the Mayor!! Phelan,Duhig and Olejniczak can be that bad I mean The Mayor ran with them before didn't he?? Oh yeah that was before He showed his true colors and started attacking anyone who disagreed with him Can't wait for the anti-Desmond, anti- Carberry posts!!! Should be worth a laugh

They all have had ties to Madigan at one point or another. I always found that a little curious, what with some of them being registered Republicans and all. Associations with Madigan can't be a deciding factor, because all political roads in this town go through Mike's Way.
