Lawyer: Alleged Driver Was Almost The Third Victim in the Granat Killings
Mohammad Salahat's lawyer says his client was recruited as the "fall guy" in the Granat murders.
The lawyer for the youngest of the four teens accused of killing a Palos Township couple says his client was almost the third victim that night.
The four teens charged in the Sept. 11 beating deaths of Palos Township couple John and Maria Granat appeared in court Monday. All four are set to reappear for arraignment on Nov. 17.
After the hearing, Joel Brodsky, the attorney for Mohammad Salahat, 17, raised his own questions about his client's role in the killings.
"Not only is he innocent, but if John Granat hadn't been stopped by police the night of the killings, Mohammd Salahat would have been the third victim of the other three young men," Brodsky said.

Granat was stopped by Palos Heights police for a traffic violation at 5:18 a.m. on Sept. 11.
Salahat, who was 16 years old on the night of the killings, was described by prosecutors as the driver. Christopher Wyma, 17, Ehab Qasem, 19, and John Granat, 17, beat and stabbed the Granats to death in their bedroom while Salahat remained in a car outside the home, prosecutors said.
However, prosecutors argue that Salahat was fully aware of what was happening inside the home.

Salahat is the only one of the four accused to not have attended Stagg High School in Palos Hills. Granat and Wyma were seniors, and Qasem a recent graduate.
Brodsky says that Salahat only met the other boys several weeks before the killings. He cites Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart's statement that Salahat remained in the car during the killings as evidence that his role might not be as clear cut as prosecutors allege.
"It becomes apparent that Mohammad (Salahat) was intended to be the fall guy and he is innocent of the charges against him," Brodsky said.
Oak Lawn Patch reported that Salahat, of Chicago Ridge, was a student at Oak Lawn Community High School.

Mohamed Salahat is innocent! If anyone ever knew this innocent young boy, you would know he had nothing to do with this horrific crime! I pray that his family stays strong through this rough time, and the truth will reveal itself! For the other young men that were apart of this horrific crime, justice will be served!

Mohammd Salahat is guilty, he knew about qand never called the police but went along with them. If one would had warned the police those people would be alive. Another lawyers trick is all, to get him off. they all need the chair.

Not so fast Nancy. Did he receive cash from inside the house from the other boys? Did he help dispose of the bloody materials from the crime scene? Why did he lie to a grand jury on 9/13/2011 and say he was never with young Mr. Granat on 9/10/2011? Mohammad has lots of explaining to do. Why did it take over three weeks for him to admit he was actually there? Does this sound like a victim to you? i know innocent until proven guilty, but good luck in this case. They all deserve double life sentences in my book.

Ok. it doesn't matter who these boys are. they need to pay for what they've done. its immoral on their part and unethical for us to support murderers.

how is he innocent, he is the scumbag that drove those guys there and waited while they killed the innocent couple in bed.. is he didnt drive them there who knows what would of happened.. he is just as gently as the rest of them, and as far as the lawyer saying he was gonna be the third victim, good they should of killed off each other,. they all deserve slow painful death, and as far as the son john, hes trying to play in it off by going into mental institution, thats not gonna work, i hope he gets everything whats coming to him along with the other three. thats the problem with punk kids nowadays, they have no respect for other people nor life.. each one of them punks should be beat everyday for the rest of their life while in jail being bubbas b#itch..

Saying that this kid or anyone as matter of fact deserve to be beaten, slow painful death, and become bubba's b**** makes you and anyone else sound no different than murderers who are quick to end a person's life without knowing a 1/3rd of the truth. You should not be so quick to dismiss these kids live without knowing what happened. Dean of Mean you bring up key and obvious questions that anyone would wonder and ask and I am sure there will be answers to those. Whether they will prove this child to actually be innocent who was pressured and forced so he can look as the "fall guy" or prove that he is guilty no one knows yet! So NO ONE should be saying such disturbing thoughts about what he or anyone should get faced with. Mario I highly doubt that he was the sole dependent factor in this and that his role as the driver would be the only way this would have occured. If you read this article he was sixteen so who knows if he even has his license or has much experience as a driver. In my opinion there was no need for a driver since they probably went in as calmly as possible, described as taking time to look for the money they are accused of taking, and probably came out as calmly as they possibly could to not cause any attention to themselves. So who knows why this kid was sitting in the car and what he knew, why he was out that late at 16. Do not prove yourselves so ignorant with your comments and keep in mind these people have families just like we do Truth will come out

Brutal to say that these parents raised their kids to be murderers, again a bit ignorant even more I really hope you do not believe that John was being controlled by anyone or the fact that he was home showed he was still manageable DUHHH he would be home if his home was the target!

Elizabeth P. You are a moron! People do not wake up and say lets raise our kids to be murders. I bet you even think that the kids who say they were molested are lying and thier rapists are innocent. You are probably the kind of person who still dates her boyfriend after your daughter tells you they have been molested. I think u r the slow one.

The driver is just as guilty. His lawyer will try and paint him as an innocent victim, but that kid knew exactly what was happening and did nothing to stop it. There is a culture now where people do not respect life and I think a lot of it stems from the casual view on abortion being taught in schools. People are told that there's nothing wrong with abortion, so life is cheapened as a result. Gradually, we are seeing moral relativism takeover, so things that were right and wrong are now shades of gray with people justifying in their minds why they do the things they do, how it's not their fault, etc.
These kids knew what they were doing was wrong, but did it anyway. They planned it and went about their days acting the part of innocent kids, which is why so many people are in shock. Same thing happened with John Wayne Gacy and Jeffery Dahmer--no one would have suspected it because sociopaths are experts at covering up their dark desires.

cal city steve, you were fine till you went off track with abortion, which has nothing to do with this case, and is your personal opinion. The driver, as innocent as he 'may have been,' IS an accessory to a crime, period, end stop.
Elizabeth P., the ONLY one who is 'emotional' about it and continuously posting nonsense and being vitriolic, is YOU. NO ONE but the police have ALL the evidence for the prosecution to persue said charges, but though 'opinions' may vary, TWO people are dead at the hands of their son and other ACCOMPLICES.
