Garage Declared A Total Loss After Being Ravaged by Fire
Fire broke out in a detached garage on Komensky Avenue in Oak Lawn late Monday afternoon that came close to spreading to the house, Oak Lawn fire officials said.
A detached garage on the 10800 block of South Komensky Avenue was declared a total loss after it was ravaged by fire late Monday afternoon.
Oak Lawn Fire Battalion Chief Mike Jensen said the garage was engulfed in flames where firefighters rolled up on the scene shortly after 6 p.m.
“It came in as a garage fire,” Jensen said. “The first crew reported a detached garage fire that was fully involved. The ambulance crew and medics pulled off to the side. The engine came and let out its hose and blasted it.”
Oak Lawn firefighters fought back the blaze and kept it from reaching the house. Jensen said it took about five minutes to strike the fire.
“We kept the house from being impinged,” the battalion chief said. “We want to protect the house and made sure everybody was out of there, that we controlled it and put it out. “
The Evergreen Park Department and other Oak Lawn firehouses pulled debris off the smoldering garage to keep it from spreading to neighboring houses.
There were no injuries to the home’s occupants or to firefighters. No cars were parked inside the garage when fire erupted.
“There was no major damage,” Jensen said. “Just normal garage belongings. There was no clutter.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation by a team of Oak Lawn firefighters.
