Playoff Primer: Kremer's High School Football Hot Picks

Sports Editor Ron Kremer takes a stab at predicting the winners in all 11 high school football playoff games involving Southland Patch teams. Check out the power of his crystal ball.

Class 8A

Homewood-Flossmoor (6-3) at Marist (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Terrific first-round matchup, one that pits two quarterbacks (H-F’s Tim Williams and Marist’s Ian Woodworth) and two explosive offensives. First team to 50 wins? Pick: Marist.

Sandburg (6-3) at Brother Rice (6-3), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Sandburg has the defensive front to make life tough on Brother Rice running backs Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. Stop them? That’s another story. Pick: Brother Rice.

Class 7A

Plainfield South (5-4) at Lincoln-Way East (9-0), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Look for Lincoln-Way East to put the pedal to the metal here in a bid to get its starters out early. Griffins will face Providence or Wheaton Warrenville South in Round 2. Pick: Lincoln-Way East.

Providence Catholic (6-3) at Wheaton Warrenville South (6-3), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Mount Carmel. Check. Wheaton Warrenville South. Check. Lincoln-Way East? Up next? The Celtics’ schedule is daunting. Little Brandon Price (5-6) is hard to find running behind a big offensive line. Tigers will hunt him down. Pick: Wheaton Warrenville South.

Shepard (5-4) at St. Rita (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Good news, bad news story for Astros. One, they’re finally hitting their stride. Two-game win streak enabled them to gain third straight playoff bid. Two, they’ll have a tough time scoring on rugged Rita defense. Pick: St. Rita.

Andrew (6-3) at Eisenhower (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Andrew’s Jim Malec deserves mention in any Coach of the Year conversation. He has led the T-Bolts to wins in five straight games and six of seven overall. They’ve bounced back from an 0-2 start that included a 41-21 loss to Eisenhower in Week 2. This one completes a dramatic turnaround. Pick: Andrew.

Class 6A

Oak Forest (6-3) at Thornton Fractional North (6-3), 6:30 p.m. Friday. Quick take: Another trip to T.F. North? Before you complain too much, know this: Oak Forest thumped the Meteors 42-12 on Sept. 23 in Calumet City. And another win here on the road likely will send the Bengals back home for Round 2 and a rematch with Lemont. And don’t you want to play Lemont at home? Pick: Oak Forest.

Richards (5-4) at Hyde Park (7-2), 1 p.m. Saturday, Eckersall Stadium, Chicago. Quick take: Richards won 3-for-4 to qualify for postseason play. Hyde Park has outscored its opponents 230-96. Something has to give. Pick: Richards.

Class 5A

Lincoln-Way West (7-2) at Joliet Catholic Academy (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Joliet. Quick take: For the most part, Lincoln-Way West’s defense has been reliable. The Warriors will be challenged by JCA’s two-headed backfield monster. Malin Jones is a Northwestern recruit. Michigan reportedly has been checking up on Ty Isaac’s interest in joining the Wolverines. Pick: Joliet Catholic Academy.

Grayslake Central (7-2) at Tinley Park (7-2), 5 p.m. Saturday. Quick take: These two teams look to be headed in opposite directions. Grayslake Central has dropped 2-of-3, including a 32-14 decision to Crystal Lake South. Tinley Park has won 3-of-4 behind an offense that averages 37.5 points. Quarterback Kyle Sheridan is the trigger man for the Titans. Pick: Tinley Park.

Class 4A

Evergreen Park (6-3) vs. Marshall (8-1), 1 pm. Saturday, Rockne Stadium, Chicago. Quick take: It’s a matchup of the South Suburban Red runner-up vs. the Public League Windy City champ. Who do you like? Marshall has outscored its opponents 394-86. Pick: Evergreen Park.

Last Week: 3-2 (.600). Season-to-date: 28-17 (.622).

My suggestion: Seed the teams 1-32 in each bracket. Call a meeting of the coaches. Get it down. Yeah, I know it's not perfect, but it's better than the system in place. Coaches seed teams for playoffs in other IHSA sports. Why not football?

Good luck to Andrew and Coach Malec tonight. Last time in Blue Island they had the game until the last quarter, I believe. It was also 100 degrees, so tonight should be interesting.

Agreed!!! Hoping Andrew wins, That sets up St Rita at Andrew in round 2, and St Rita not having to travel to O'Fallon for round 3 but having a home game instead. We can repeat the O'Fallon @ Rita playoff game from 2006 - minus the driving rain, if possible. Although O'Fallon had those fancy pants rain coats for their players.

Go back to how it was. 1 vs. 32, 2 vs. 31. It wasn't broke and didn't need fixing This "quadrant" seeding is another attempt by the IHSA to prevent parochial schools from advancing.Simeon is ranked #4, over Marist, Mt Carmel and Br. Rice! The top 5 schools in 8A are Wabounsie,Loyola,Mt Carmel, Br.Rice, Marist. Based on record and schedule strength. They should be playing Evanston,Belleville,Curie,Nequa Vallye and Proviso West. And in 7A Eisenhower is seed higher than Providence!
