Burbank Police respond to report of gunfire near 81st Place and Mayfield on Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported but bullets struck some homes.
Gunshots rang out near 81st Street and Mayfield Avenue in Burbank on Tuesday afternoon putting a junior high school on lockdown as police combed the streets looking for a possible discarded gun and suspects.

Police sent out a five-part text over the Everbridge emergency system to residents regarding the shooting at 3:55 p.m:
"The Burbank Police Department responded to a shots fire called in the area of 81st Place and Mayfield at 2:22 pm this afternoon October 2nd. No one was injured but property damage did occur. Police officers are currently in the area searching for a possible discarded handgun with the use of metal detectors and K9 officers. Liberty Junior High School was placed on lockdown immediately and currently arrangements are being made to systematically release the students. Bus riders are being released at this time. Please avoid this area if possible. Thank you."
ABC-7 News reported an exchange of gunfire between some people on the sidewalk and a passing car.
Burbank Police Captain John Ford said no one was injured but bullets had struck some homes. The shooting occurred about an hour before Liberty Junior High School’s 3:19 p.m. dismissal.
The school, which is located several blocks away from where the shooting occurred, was put on lockdown as a precautionary measure. About 15 police and K9 officers searched the area.

“Our fear was if there was a handgun because of the kids walking home from school,” Ford said.
Tuesday’s incident marks the third incident of gunfire since August. In the early morning hours of August 2, four people were shot outside of a home in what police said was a gang related shooting.
At a Sept. 24 town hall meeting at Reavis High School, police said the summer’s uptick in gang activity was due to rival warring gang factions.

I have both email and text features sent to my mobile device, and they were both rolling through @ 330pm. My daughter attends Liberty JH, so obviously I was very concerned. However, I think the city's response time was valid; why cause widespread panic by jumping the gun with "shots fired - run and hide your kids and family!" Police had to evaluate and secure the area first, and I am sure within minutes they were there to do so. That right there would make me feel at ease knowing the cops are now a presence. So, they evaluated the situation and then sent the notice. When I found out I had to pick up my daughter from LJH because of the lockdown, the police presence was overwhelming, so I knew they had control of the situation.
Point #1: Nobody dropped the ball here. BPD conducted this with a sense of urgency without causing a panic. I was never overly worried about my daughter's safety while staying informed by BPD.
Point #2: If you want to get a feel of living like you are in Pilsen or the West Side of Chicago, then encourage the town to install Police Cameras on every corner around Burbank. Then, this beautiful community will completely go to hell. As Burbank residents, we must be vigilant when witnessing and reporting the nonsense that happens around here. Not all groups of kids or youths are gangbangers or troublemakers; HOWEVER when something seems out of place or you feel the tension in the air... CALL POLICE! It just may prevent something far worse from happening!

The complaints have more to do with the history of Burbank never telling anybody anything. Couple this with the lack of reporting from local newspapers and people are left wondering "how long has this been going on?" The Southtown has all but abandoned this area. SW News is just a weekly. It seems the only way we will get any news is from on line sources like Patch, Facebook, etc.. This being the case Burbank needs to have someone work on keeping their web sites current.

How many times have you ever read anthing about 111 Bob? ZIERO TIMES! The former superintendent gets canned just like she was when she got canned as a principlal in 111. Then with a couple of WELL QUALIFED in-house peole in the district the board hires some guy from southern Indiana. There is never anything in the papers about board meeting and what they do. I wonder why?

The police force can't do everything, that is way us as residents of our communites have to take the blinders off and report what we see to the authorites no matter how little or stuipid you think it. Always go with gut!!

Getting sick of these Punks walking around the neighborhoods looking for trouble.. Maybe it's time to rewrite some of our laws! Instead of the police worrying about being reprimanded for questioning these characters they should be allowed to protect US!! These kids know the laws protect the criminals. Take back our streets. We want to sit outside and go for walks with our families safely.. Send these gang bangers back to where they were bred, the city!!!

Don't worry, the police know where they live. They'll just go knock on the door and get them.

We need new legislation/laws regarding stop and search and being Politically correct.
Enough has been done to our country by thugs that have No Regard for human life, and feel Entitled to Everything that anyone has worked hard for!!!

I appreciate the information. FYI - The school's main entrance is just half a block from the apparent location of the crime. When I left school at about 3:30 PM, the cops were also at a house in the 8000 block of Mason, directly across from the school.

Gang bangers are here to stay in Burbank. It's time for all the good hard working people to move. Like they did in Ashburn, Scottdale, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, Clearing, Marquette Park.

I lived in Burbank and had problems withy he same group of kids causing problems all the time. I called the police constantly and they never did a thing. I was told that maybe I should move by the police officer that came to one call. I took his advice and I no longer live there. Thank god!
