OUTSIDE CHICAGO, IL -- Police SWAT teams nabbed a man suspected of robbing an Oak Lawn bank on Saturday afternoon after an 11-hour standoff.

Around 2:14 p.m. Saturday, a suspect described as a male black in his 20s entered the Bank of America at 4046 W. 111th St. through a hole in the roof after the bank had closed. Two bank employees were handcuffed with zip ties. The alleged bandit escaped through the ceiling with an undisclosed amount of cash, Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann said.

READ earlier on-the-scene coverage from Saturday afternoon.

Kaufmann confirmed that police had a person in custody around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Kaufmann said that SWAT team members from the FBI and South Suburban Emergency Response Team located the bank robbery suspect trapped in an air duct after a methodical search of the ceiling on the second floor of the shopping center where the bank is located, Chicago Breaking News reported.

READ earlier on-the-scene coverage from Saturday evening.

The alleged bandit was wedged so tight inside the duct that he had to be cut out, Kaufmann said.

Police believed the robbery suspect was still in the building because of a broken window in an office and a blood trail that led to different parts the second floor.

Pulaski Road reopened around 1 a.m. after being closed for much of the afternoon and evening.

Why did it take so long for the police, FBI and other agencies to locate and arrest this bank robber? It's either the robber was smarter then the police , or the police were dumber than the robber. With today's technology the robber should have been captured immediately.

It's obvious you know absolutely nothing about law enforcement. First and foremost it's not like the make believe cop shows on t.v. with all the high tech gadgets and secondly the safety of the officers doing the searching is paramount. They had to search in the ceiling of a shopping plaza which I'm sure was very dark and tight. Just be glad they caught this clown and that nobody was hurt. By the way, I am in law enforcement and have a working knowledge of what they were going through.

Way to secure the area immediately Oqk Lawn. A situation like this could have broke-bad if not handled properly. You secured the perimeter and kept the outsiders safe.

Nicely done ladies and gentlemen!!!

I personally am grateful to all the police officers involved. That being said..where are Jesse J, AND Al Sharpton now.....shouldn't they be here to defend this "1st class citizen?" ope cause it was a black man in a white neighborhood.....

WHY does EVERY other post have to turn into some thing about race? Those guys aren't here because this guy doesn't deserve defending by anyone. Go reda the Tinley Patch, white people hitting white people is still getting idiots defending racism, being anti-Semitic, being proud white nationalist...
This guy was a criminal who probably will use poor personal circumstances to defend criminal behavior. The fact he is black should have nothing to do with the fact he is a criminal (unless you are willing to speak up and say you think all black people are criminals) or the fact that he got caught by determined law enforcement.
Always somebody stirring up nonsense.
STM blaming police because they didn't do something on STM's apparent timetable, and peggy collins and ken jenkins feeling it is necessary to make this racial.
Just thank the police and keep your small mind to yourselves.

OLPD, SSERT, CPD, Sheriff's Dept., FBI, and all other agencies on the scene during yesterday's ordeal I say, Congratulations of a job well done!!! As for the OLPD officers, some of which their shift was about to end when this call came out, I say Thank you so, so much for holding over and keeping the scene secure. It could not have been easy for any officer standing in the hot sun in a dark shirt and vest and in some cases full SWAT gear with helmets holding in all the body heat. I don't know if food was brought in for you. At some point fatigue from these conditions doesn't make any overtime pay worth it, but you stayed because of your dedication. I know you have families and I remember all too well listening to a scanner and being filled with worry and hoping my loved one would not be harmed because of a man with a gun situation. I hope OL residents realize this when it comes time later this year to talk about budgets and cutting back on the amount of officers this Village needs to employ. Situations like yesterday don't happen often but they do happen and it appears major crimes are happening more frequently in our Village. I also hope that OL residents remember this situation when during budget talks the Village management complains that the police department abuses its overtime budget. Yesterday's ordeal had to put a huge hole in the police department's overtime budget.

Nice to see all the appreciative comments for the outstanding job done by ALL the personnel involved. It's easy for someone like STM to arm chair quarterback from the comfort of his home not knowing all the facts and conditions. I grew up in Oaklawn before all this kind of nonsense started and always felt safe. After reading this story, I wouldn't hesitate to move back if given the chance.

I was out getting petitions signed in that area on Saturday, and people told me they'd received phone "area alerts" about the incident. People stayed home and away from the area under siege. I can't say this often, but this seems to have been tax dollars well spent!

It is refreshing to hear about positive police work instead of the normal bashing. People forget that the average day of law enforcement means they are always risking their lives for others. This case shows that OLPD and the FBI went the distance until the suspect was in custody. Thank you for a job well done.

Few things:There are more people like STM than any will admit, but that kind of knee-jerk reaction shows just how ignorant (in the literal sense of the word) people can be.
Police are many things, and not always perfect, but I have to say, all of my ineractions with the OLPD have been positive. This includes yesterday, right before this mess started. Seven squads (plus ambulance and fire truck) were in front of the office because some idiot bunch of young adults (I refuse to call people who can vote kids) jumped some other guy. The cops tooks the time, sorted out the details, figured out who was to blame, and arrested all but one of the people, because they realized he wasn't guilty of anything but bad friends. I saw the entire thing, and it was all smoothly done, under the eyes of on-lookers and the blaze of the sun. I have NO doubt that the same officers then took part in the hunt for the doofus in the bank. Long day indeed. NOBODY wants to pay more in taxes, but I will say it forever, the best way to protect your biggest investment (your home) is good schools and LOW crime. It isn't that crime will NEVER happen, it is how the police react when it does. Look at the response time of this incident to the far corner of our town, versus say, the thing in Tinley, right on 159th. Not to bash Tinley, but to say that we have some pretty great enforcement in this town, and I wouldn't trade it for Tinley.
I thanked them that day when they left here, who knew it would twice? Thanks!

Sara, what Peggy Collins wrote, does have a lot of truth to it, so give her a break, and I hope that Piggy was a typo and not intentional. Rev. Jesse Lewis Jackson Jr. and the Reverend Al Sharpton do have a Track Record of alleging some sort of racism whenever a Black is Arrested/Killed/Beat Senseless especially if someone other then a Black Person is alleged to be the offender. You are correct this is not a racial incident, but either are 90% or the incidents that those two (2) individuals get themselves involved in, and when they are proven to be as wrong as two (2) left shoes in the same box, you never hear an apology, you never hear an oops, they just keep up the same rhetoric, so even though your comments have a certain amount accuracy, stay politically correct and don't resort to name calling and/or typo's. Remember that the Reverend Jessie Lewis Jackson Jr. and Reverend al Sharpton and the Weathermen on television share a common trait. All of them are wrong 90% of the time. Yet they are always on the television.

Freedom of speech is very often shunned in favor of political correctness. We will never all agree on any issue, but we can agree to disagree. The bottom line is, law enforcement performed a job well done.

Just a thought -what in the world does someones race have to do with the fact that the idiot ROBBED A BANK? Is it being insinuated that only Black people are criminals? Or that Jackson and Sharpton come running to defend every Black person that does a crime whether they're gulity or not? If so, that's incredibly narrow minded. The fact is that crime -and stupidity, apparently, since this mental midget was caught at the scene of the crime -comes in all colors and not all if us Black people play the race card...just thank the OLPD for the fine job they did and move on, people.

@Dave W.-its being more than insinuated, its being blatently said, as evidenced by Anthony and others posts......what a sad commentary on this country in 2012. Unfortunately, I'm not surprised...I refuse to get into a war of words about 'statistics ' or beliefs but one more thought -how many people would have posted comments if the article HADN'T mentioned the race of the criminal?

Patch mentioned the race of the alleged bank robber because at the time, it wasn't known if he was still holed up in the bank or at large. What if he escaped the dragnet? He could have been running around the neighborhood. The news report required a physical description. Patch, and I as a journalist, do not mention race, creed or religion in crime news reports, unless it is a factor in the story, such as a hate crime or when community safety is at risk or threatened.

Tammie, If some bank robber got away from the police. I would expect a code red phone call to my home from the police dept with a description of the man.or woman. I have a right to know weather I am looking out for a white, yellow ,black, or purple loose bank robber. My rights come before racial sensitivities.
