POLL: Do You Think The Changes To The Village's Animal Control Ordinance Are Fair?
Pet owners in Oak Lawn now face new leash laws and the number of pets they are allowed to own.
Oak Lawn has changed its animal control ordiance placing new restrictions and stiffer penalities for those who neglect their animals or allow them to run loose. Residents are also limited to three dogs and/or cats combined per household. Those currently owning more than three dogs and cats will be grandfathered into the new changes, but owners may be asked by the village to produce a letter from their vet stating their animals are cared for and up to date on vaccinations.
Do you think the changes are fair? Take the poll.

I agree with the new laws and I'm happy they are not breed specific. I walk my leashed dog frequently and we have been aggressively approached by all breeds of dogs not contained on private property and by dogs unleashed with their owners on the walking paths.

This is a good law but will it be enforced ? Daily I walk my dog and have called the police three times about dogs off the leash. One time we were terrorized by a Pitt bull (this has happened with other breeds also so I am not just singling this breed out) and a young woman helped us and gave us a ride home. Each time I called,it took animal control a minimum of 15 minutes to arrive. My question is :Why don''t they send a squad while waiting for the animal control officer who may be on a call on the other side of the village ? If that young woman had not helped me,I and my dog may have been seriously injured while waiting. The dogs were gone before the animal control arrived. Will it take an attack resulting in death before this is taken as a real police emergency?? In the time it takes them to arrive that very well could happen.

I agree with the leash law, this is a safety issue. I disagree with the limit on how many pets I can have in my home. This is supposed to be a free country. Why is the government controlling what I have in the privacy of my home? Do we know why they felt they had to do this?

Terry,
The new rules were spurred by a couple of dog attacks in Oak Lawn last summer. Here is the companion piece.
