The candlelight vigil honoring the Newtown, CT, shooting victims happens Thursday, Dec.27, on the Oak Lawn Village Green at Cook and Dumke.

Residents are asked to begin arriving at 6:45 p.m. At approximately 7 p.m., the Christmas lights will go dark on the Village Green.

Oak Lawn residents are also asked to shut off their outdoor Christmas lights in conjunction with the community vigil until 7:26 p.m. -- one minute for each of the Sandy Hook School shooting victims.

The program features recorded music, prayer and candles. The mayor is looking for children to volunteer to read aloud a Sandy Hook student or teacher's name during the vigil.

Adults and children may also leave letters and cards of support that will be mailed collectively to the residents of Newtown, CT, in a show of community support.

Candles will be provided, but residents are welcome to bring their own. Following is the complete program for Thursday's ceremony, provided by Mayor Dave Heilmann. A pdf of the program is also available for downloading and printing.
