Richards' Moeller Takes it 'One Skate at a Time' in Fight to Help Palos Neighbors Beat Cancer
Richards figure skating sensation Jordan Moeller will serve as the headliner in a fundraiser for Children's Oncology Services, Inc., on Saturday, April 14, at Southwest Ice Arena.
Jordan Moeller is doing his part to help fight cancer “One Skate at a Time.”
Moeller, the Richards High School junior who won the U.S. Figure Skating Intermediate Men’s national championship in 2010, will serve as the headliner in a fundraiser for Children’s Oncology Services, Inc., on Saturday, April 14, at Southwest Ice Arena.
The event, sponsored by the U.S. Figure Skating Association and the Northern Ice Skating Club, will feature performances by a number of accomplished skaters, but none more in tune with the cause than Moeller.
He decided to put on a show titled “One Skate at a Time” after being introduced to a program called “One Day at a Time” by Debbie Swanson, his freshman algebra teacher at Richards. Swanson’s niece, Julia Fisher, first was enrolled in the program during her treatment for cancer.
“I got involved with COSI (Children’s Oncology Services, Inc.) through Mrs. Swanson,” Moeller said in a news release. “They do great things for children and their families. It is such a worthy and noble cause. I am honored to put on this event.”
Moeller placed second in the U.S. Men’s Novice Division competition in January 2011 and continues to train in pursuit of his dream—skating in the Olympics. He’ll be skating for Fisher and others like her on Saturday, April 14.
Fisher is a student at Shepard High School in Palos Heights. She met some new friends through her involvement in One Step at a Time at summer camp—Matthew Dixon and Kyle Ryan, students at Stagg High School in Palos Hills.
“We swim, fish, camp, go on boats, play games,” Fisher said. “After going to camp for a few years, everyone there becomes your second family.”
“The counselors are there for the kids and never fail to make every minute of camp a blast,” Dixon said.
