Search Warrant Served in Burbank Double Slaying

Burbank Police and federal agents searched a Chicago home last month which could be linked to an area double murder.

The investigation into an elderly Burbank couple found murdered in their home on March 6 is now focused on the male victim as a possible target, says a source close to the investigation.

Peter Mountain, 79, who went by the nickname “Rocky,” and his long-time girlfriend, Sally Lopez, 80, were found shot and stabbed multiple times in their home in the 6400 block of West 83rd Place in Burbank. Mountain had also been bludgeoned, according to reports.

Burbank Police believe the double murder to be an isolated incident with no threat to the immediate community. There were no signs of forced entry, nor was burglary or robbery a motive, they said.

The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is focusing its investigation on Mountain as a possible target. Lopez may have been killed because she was a witness, according to the source.

Around March 23, a federal search warrant was executed at a home in the 3500 block of South Artesian Avenue in Chicago. Burbank police searched the home on the same day, but for a separate investigation.

A man in his thirties who is a recent parolee was taken into custody at the address on federal parole violations. He had not been charged as of Monday in connection to the Burbank murders, but was being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago.

The warrant included a laundry list of possible evidence linking the person of interest to the double homicide—including latent fingerprints, clothing, trace evidence, fibers, saliva, blood, guns, knives, bludgeoning instruments, cell phone records, photographs—“the usual stuff,” the source said.

Burbank Police Capt. Joe Ford confirmed that a warrant had been executed at the Artesian Avenue residence.

“This was completed in conjunction with a federal agency,” Ford said in an e-mail. “This is still an ongoing investigation so the details of the case remain confidential.”
