‘Speeders’ Overtime, Harley-Davidson Demo, Video Gaming Top Village Board Agenda
Will the Oak Lawn Village Board meeting get political? We'll find out tonight (Tuesday) at 7:30 p.m.
It’s the fourth Tuesday of the month and you know what that means, the Oak Lawn Village Board’s second bimonthly meeting.
See the attached pdf of the sub-zero, Chilly Willy village board agenda.
Here’s what we’ll be watching:
- Massage parlor – Oak Lawn trustees are set to vote on a special-use permit for a new massage parlor in the Oak Lawn Pomenade shopping center at 95th Street and Ridgeland Avenue. This is not to be confused with another proposal for a massage parlor that was shot down by the Planning and Development Commission in December. According to plan commission chairman, Wayne Gray, this particular establishment provides therapeutic massage for people with back problems and arthritis. The floor plan is open with five tables and clients will be clothed. The petitioner is Chang Suo Xue. An earlier proposal had a shower and closed-door floor plan. The latest plan has the Planning and Development Commission's blessing, 8-0.
- Harley-Davidson – At the request of Mayor Dave Heilmann, the competitive bidding process for demolition of the Harley-Davidson building is being reopened. Trustees vote on a motion to rescind an earlier resolution from the Jan. 8 meeting. The building is part of the 111th Street and Cicero Avenue re-development.
- Video Gaming Cafes - The village board will re-open its discussion of the correlation of new business licenses and new liquor licenses by video gaming cafes with the village's approving gambling machines last fall. On Jan. 8, Trustee Tom Duhig (Dist. 4) asked if "95th Street was becoming casino row?" Before the village board votes on liquor license applications for two new video gaming cafes, the mayor and trustees will discuss whether or not to set a cap on new gaming cafes coming to town. Another suggestion is to grandfather in existing businesses. Seven existing bars and restaurants have had their video gaming licenses approved; 11 licenses are pending, including Krauss's Gaslite Lounge, Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 and Hooters.
- ‘Speeders’ – Trustee Tom Phelan (Dist. 6) was held up at a work meeting earlier this month when ‘Speeders’ was brought up at the Jan. 8. Artfully, Phelan and Trustee Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) have placed it back on tonight's agenda, which means we'll be stocking up on Cheetos. It's based on the writings of mayoral challenger Sandra Bury, who alleges that Mayor Dave Heilmann, used village resources while being paid to perform the role of the judge in TruTv’s forgettable “Speeders Fight Back” cable show. Heilmann is running for his third term as Oak Lawn mayor. According to Bury’s documentation, the producers did not reimburse the village $4,000 in overtime costs for Oak Lawn police officers to participate in the show. Heilmann acknowledged he got paid for his work and that the producers approached him to play the role of judge, not he. Phelan and Olejniczak have introduced a resolution authorizing the village manager to seek reimbursement of four-year, past due overtime costs.
The Oak Lawn Village Board meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Village Hall, 9466 S. Raymond Ave. Village board meetings take place every second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. The meetings are free and open to the public.

They leave the B and L out of video gambling so that you don't realize that it makes people Big Losers.

Why not try to get a Casino at 111th & Cicero with some high end stores and hotel.. Don't complain about the class of people coming into town when you allow establishments like Chuckie Cheese and Hooters(along with most of the businesses at 95th and Pulaski over to a little west of Christ Hospital) that probably account for half the police calls!!

No public comments! The trustees will be bad enough, especially with Ole and Phelan on the warpath over Speeders.
Yet, finally, something Andy and I can peacefully agree on: Go Hawks!

Why does the manager need authorization to collect a bill due to the village? If it is owed, collect it! Why didn't he collect it along time ago? It seems "political" not "artful" to put the issue on the agenda. Maybe the Mayor should ask to amend the motion to direct the manager to collect all money due the village without making it a political squabble.

Maybe questions can be put to Ole & phelan regarding the whereabouts of the "missing liquor" and "missing vouchers" from FOTG. The "missing security tape from Deja brew". Most importantly, their personal friends/acquaintance's and Families whose businesses' have "Benefited" directly from each of their Own Political Offices and the taxpayers of Oak Lawn!

Ask the " Special Events" director about the FOTG questions... Oh yeah he has been MIA at board meetings since the board assignments switched in May

One more thing, "Hooters" wants a gambling license??? You're already gambling on once you walk in, you'll be getting out the door safely! !

Let Hooters have a video gaming license? Might as well give one to Chuck E. Cheese.

How about some REAL answers for the other businesses located at 111th and Cicero. We are still sitting here and waiting with no answers forthcoming ~ only shady realtors fishing for information.

I can imagine the fine food and friendly atmosphere that will be offered at those two proposed video gaming cafes! How about approving all of the pending licenses before you give an edge to some corporation that wants to do the bare minimum required to milk this community instead of support it. Can we try to give our existing, locally owned, long-time businesses a fighting chance. Why is it that we have to actually ask that of our elected village board! How many local businesses that have a long and strong history and actually bring something to our community will suffer the same fate as Vino Tinto?
