Standard Bank Brings Holiday Hope to Park Lawn

Buy an ornament for Park Lawn Services and help deck the holiday trees at participating Standard Bank branches in the Southland.

Standard Bank is looking to ring some bells this holiday season so that Park Lawn’s Angel Fund can get some wings.

For the second year in a row, Standard Bank has designated Park Lawn as the beneficiary of the Banks “Holiday Hope for Park Lawn” ornament sale. The program has been expanded to include nine Standard Bank branches in Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Palos Park, Oak Forest, Hickory Hills, Frankfort and Orland Park.

“Standard Bank’s whole niche is supporting local organizations, and being more involved and vested in the communities we serve,” Oak Lawn-branch manager Jean Fornel said.

The ornaments sell for $1, $5 and $10. Proceeds will be used to buy Christmas presents and other everyday necessities for developmentally disabled and intellectually challenged adults living at Park Lawn’s residential facilities.

Customers are invited to purchase and hang their ornaments on the Park Lawn holiday trees located in the branch lobbies.

The Angel Fund was created in the mid-1990s when Park Lawn began receiving developmentally disabled adults in its residences and programs after other facilities closed their doors. Many of the new residents were diagnosed severely and profoundly disabled.

“Park Lawn instantly realized the growing need for hospital beds, lifts, coats and blankets, necessities of life that we don’t often budget for,” spokeswoman Kristen Bonk said. “The Angel Fund goes to people with little or no family support.”

Park Lawn residents only receive $30 to $50 a month in living expenses from Social Security, which doesn't cover the cost of a new coat, a new pair of shoes or a night out at a movie theater or restaurant.

Proceeds from ornament sales ensure that every Park Lawn residents has a gift to open on Christmas, Bonk said.

Angel Fund donations have been used purchase bedroom sets, new mattresses, furniture, and maintenance and upkeep of medical equipment, as well as winter coats, boots and toiletry items.

Park Lawn was founded in 1955 by families who lobbied national and state lawmakers for funding to create educational, vocational and social programs that would enable their developmentally and intellectually challenged children lead fulfilling and productive lives. The organization takes its name from Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn, where Park Lawn was started.

The ornaments are on sale through Dec. 23. Standard Bank hopes to raise $5,000 for the Park Lawn Angel Fund.
