The Dance Begins: Oak Lawn Village Board Matchups

Pending any last-minute, surprise write-in candidates or challenges, the Oak Lawn Village Board races appear to be set.

All is quiet at Oak Lawn Village Hall with village board candidates completing filing their nominating petitions to get on the April 9 ballot.

On Wednesday afternoon, Village Clerk Jane Quinlan, who is up for reelection, said that no one has so far filed a challenge against any of the candidates’ petitions. The deadline to file a challenge in Oak Lawn is Friday, Jan. 4.

With most local races uncontested, the Oak Lawn Village Board races may be the only dance in town. The last day to file a declaration of intent to run as a write-in candidate in any of the local races is Feb. 7.

There were no last-minute surprise candidates emerging at the Dec. 26 filing deadline, with the exception of Joe Sorrentino, the current D123 board of education president who announced his candidacy for Oak Lawn trustee in sixth district.

Trustee Tom Phelan (Dist. 6) announced last month that he would not be seeking a third term on the village board.

Hitting the ground running is Oak Lawn mayoral candidate Sandra Bury, who is challenging the incumbent Dave Heilmann. Heilmann is chasing his third term and is running a slate of candidates called the Mayor's Indepdence Party. (To run as a slate, a candidate must be fielded for each open village board position.)

Bury, running on a platform of “transparency and ethics” has sent out several mailers critical of the mayor. She has yet to reveal any of her plans for how she intends to address public safety, the pension cliff, tax revenue, business development and infrastructure.

Bury has aligned herself up with a group of candidates who call themselves Oak Lawn First. All are running as independents. The candidates include incumbent trustees Alex Olejniczak (Dist. 2) and Tom Duhig (Dist. 4); and challengers Tim Desmond and Mike Carberry who are running in the first and sixth districts, respectively.

Here are the final village board matchups, pending write-in candidates:

Mayor

  • David Heilmann (incumbent; Mayor’s Independence Party)
  • Sandra Bury (challenger; Oak Lawn First)

Village Clerk

  • Jane Quinlan (incumbent; self)
  • Melissa Moran (challenger; Mayor’s Independence Party)

Dist. 1 Trustee (2-year term)

  • Cynthia Trautsch (incumbent; appointed to fill vacancy; Mayor’s Independence Party)
  • Tim Desmond (challenger; Oak Lawn First)

Dist. 2 Trustee

  • Alex Olejniczak (incumbent; Oak Lawn First)
  • Julie Misner (challenger; Mayor’s Independence Party)

Dist. 4 Trustee

  • Tom Duhig (incumbent; Oak Lawn First)
  • Tim Reilly (challenger; Mayor’s Independence Party)
  • Terry Vorderer (challenger; self)

Dist. 6 Trustee

  • Carol Sheahan (challenger; Mayor’s Independence Party)
  • Mike Carberry (challenger; Oak Lawn First)
  • Joseph Sorrentino (challenger; self)

Regarding those links at the end of this item: thousands of words, so much drama, and not a darn real issue addressed. Here's to hoping all the candidates for all the offices produce literature, interviews and (I would guess) debates that speak to the issues we face today, rather than simply blow bugles about their parish affiliations and such. Oh.....and here's to hoping that people get out there and vote! The turnout has been pretty pee-poor in the last few elections.

Lorraine, Jane Quinlan is communicating with the press before the dealdine today? Wonder how much communicating will take place from her office when early voters show up?

Clerk Quinlan has always returned my phone calls and email. She is professional, courteous and helpful, as is her staff in fulfilling FOIA requests. The mayor, village manager and trustees also are responsive and respectful of my deadlines, even when the going get tough.

I was on earlier and saw a couple of other posts that are now missing. Why? Are the sensorship police on duty? If so there are quite a few offensive posts from certain individuals, on Patch that always seem to be overlooked, as far as I can tell. Selective sensorship...HMMM

Lorraine is showing just how PROFESSIONAL she is. Take note and apply towards her articles. What this shows is that she cannot and is not working in unbiased third party mode as a jouurnalist should. She does not have the ability to seperate her personal feelings from any story. This comment will be gone soon I am pretty sure.

I am not an elected official like some of the unknown bloggers ( I believe ) on this site. Being involved in politics means you are going to get criticism, that is part of the job.. Bullying reporters is not part of the job. If you don't like news being reported that you think is wrong or biased, stop doing it. It is the same excuses we did something wrong, but blame everyone else for catching us.

So you believe the media is fair and balanced? Or do you just enjoy the patch because it prints the view you approve of today?

I wish there was censorship or bias involved here, that would mean that none of this is really happening. It's all too true, and both sides of the Board have brought it all on themselves.

The truth is Jane Quinlan may be polite, but she does cheat when she whispers to voters coming into her office who they may want to vote for. She usually starts with the line "I know I really shouldn't do this BUT ....... " Proof from former assistants. This election she will not use her office to bus voters in. Sorry to say, she lacks character and worries only about her reputation.

Why don' t you help your buddy Bob stay out of jail instead of worrying about what is
on these posts. It would be a lot more beneficial to the mayor and his candidates, they are going to need it :)

Poor Andy he is really stressing this election. He is truly losing focus and just wildly tossing allegations and rants. Oh wait...that's normal. My bad.

i'm not stressing smooch ( good name ) I'm not running for anything.. The FBI isn't investigating me,I'm not in a tough mayoral race, I didn't get involved in bid rigging for a family member, I didn't try to involve a business partner in a village development.Your guys are the ones stressing out. If you weren't why would you even care what I have to say anyways?? This is my favorite time of year because you have the chance to elect a different vision for Oak Lawn and all those high and mighty politicos are scared out of their minds worrying they may be out of a job come April..
