The Rundown: The Poop on Dog Poop, New Chamber Digs, Liquor Licenses
Highlights of the Oak Lawn Village Board meeting from May 8, 2012.
It was a thin agenda for the Oak Lawn Village Board during their Tuesday meeting. Mayor Dave Heilmann was out of town so Trustee Bob Streit (Dist. 3) served as president pro tem.

Here are some of the highlights.
Dog Poop on Path
Trustee Cindy Trautsch (Dist. 1) reported that “dog litter” signs have been installed on 93rd Street between Oak Park and Natchez Avenues, running parallel to Centennial Park.
Trautsch said that her constituents have complained of people walking their dogs in the park, which is illegal in all Oak Lawn parks except for Bailey’s Crossing Dog Park. Leashed dogs are also allowed on the trails at Wolf Wildlife Refuge.
After some investigating, Trautsch said the path is not part of the park, so it’s okay for people to walk their dogs there.
The new signs inform people that they “need to clean up after their animals,” Trautsch said.

Oak Lawn Chamber Moving To Metra Station
The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce inked a deal to sublet the unused ticket area at the Metra Station, Village Manager Larry Deetjen reported. The village leases the train station from Metra and maintains the interior and platform. The chamber is subleasing the space from the village and will continue to pay rent to the village. Details concerning roles, responsibilities and insurance are being negotiated.
New Owner Buys Joan’s Place
In the village president’s report, President Pro Tem Streit informed the board that the West End 6950 Corp. bought Joan’s Place located at 6950 W. 95th St. in Dist. 1.
Trustee Trautsch said that residents living near the bar are concerned the new owners will have bands performing there.
Trautsch said when she asked Larry Deetjen for an update on the property, he knew nothing about it.
“I’m not trying to get on you, Larry, but this [liquor license application] came in on April 14,” Trautsch said. “If I asked, you would have known about it.”
“It’s the village president’s report, I don’t get liquor licenses,” Deetjen shot back, perhaps still feeling the affects of the epic Planning and Development Commission from the evening before.
“I do not know anything about the prior owners of Joan’s Place. I don’t know the current owners,” Deetjen continued. “No one spoke to me about liquor licenses. It is the president’s report, not the village manager’s report. That’s what it is.”
Evidentally, Trautsch had already talked to the new owners, who also own Murphy’s Law. She said the new owner agreed to work with the village if residents if the tavern becomes a problem.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s website, Kenneth Mandernach is the agent.

Concerning "Dog poop on path". I exercise at several of the parks in Oak Lawn, often running in the grass, and all of them have a dog poop problem. I believe there is a need for a better inforcement policy concerning dog walking and cleaning up after your dog in our parks. The path at Wolf wildlife is outlined with poop. There must be something we can do there, maybe adding dog waste disposal stations.

I walk my dogs often and ALWAYS clean up after them. I have noticed, however, that others aren't as thoughtful. This really should be enforced as not only is it annoying to step in poop, it is a health concern, too. I know it is a problem as I've been yelled at a few times by angry homeowners who think my dogs will leave a present in their yard. How about a fine for those who don't pick up after their pets?

I agree I always clean up after my dog. Not everyone is a responsible dog owner and picking up poop comes with the territory. I walk along the path and there is poop everywhere. I feel bad for the people who have property along the pathway and several of them have children. These property owners do a beautiful job of keeping it clean and the grass is always trimmed. I think something more needs to be done to fine people who do not pick up after the dog.

I say a fine and reward if you catch someone doing it. We all have cellphones now, snap a picture of the offender!

I would rather the police fine people for the poop than something that doesn't hurt anyone like a seatbelt (for the driver or adults). It Is a health hazard, and disgusting, and messy, and rude. Same thing goes for the leash law...I know there is one, make it more enforced.

I live on a corner on a busy street with an extra lot and people constantly think it's fine to let their dogs use it as a toilet. Hey I don't take my cat to YOUR yard to do it's thing. Keep your dogs at home!
