What Should Go Here? The Old Beatty Lumber Yard
It’s time to play “what should go here,” the game that lets readers dream big about the kind of businesses and development they’d like to see in Oak Lawn.
Those of us living near the former Beatty Lumber property will miss the local possum and raccoon population, but we’ll be glad when something finally goes up on what has become a neighborhood eyesore.

The old lumberyard has been a hot topic of conversation in the village board chambers—so much so, that the rodents living there's ears must be burning. A nine-story medical office tower and state-of-the-art senior center are just a few of the proposed concepts for the old lumberyard at 96th Street and 52nd Avenue, political drama aside.
“We’re working on different concepts,” Mayor Dave Heilmann said. “I don’t think anything has been decided. We’re getting some thoughts together.”
Whatever those thoughts may be, Oak Lawn residents will have a chance to weigh in at a meeting in the near future, according to the mayor.
Follow Oak Lawn Patch on Facebook.
You’ve read the stories—now it’s your chance to dream big and play developer. Tell us in the comments what you’d like to see happen with the old Beatty Lumber property. Let it rip because you have a local election coming up.
(We do think that the Beaver sign should be somehow preserved.)

a park that honors veterans such as the one in Munster Indiana on Calumet avenue. It honors all wars and is incorporated around a small body of water wth walkways and fountains. Has anyone been to where i speak of? quite impressive!

Isn't that up to the developer? How about we play "let's write relevant stories and quit being lazy!"

Zula, I live 2 blocks from there Absolutely NOT!!!!
How about a park because on the west side of the lumber yard where they closed off Cook they have 1 tree and a sign that says Cook Avenue Park. I highly think it should be a veteran's park since the VFW is right on the north side of it! The east side of 52nd should be a parking the Children's Museum because the location is a lot better than where it is now.

I would hope to see something different that is not available anywhere else in town that and that it would not be a solid monolithic dense packed structure, definitely not a medical facility of any kind and definitely not more than 5 stories and preferably of varying levels/heights.
It should have abundant quality landscaping and open spaces where people could sit outside and eat drink and possibly see live entertainment. This would likely be a multi tenant/multi use facility with possibly a brewery/ restaurant with quality food. It would be nice to have a quality butcher, a market with local food, various specialty shops, etc. Most of all it needs to have character, gathering space and bring back the neighborhood feel that the village had before all the recent development. There are many towns with quality developments with character and interest adjacent to their train stations.

I also meant to include it needs to be highly energy efficient, incorporate sustainable high performance materials and technology and be, at minimum, LEED Silver or equivalent.

"We’re working on different concepts,” Mayor Dave Heilmann said. “I don’t think anything has been decided. We’re getting some thoughts together.” He doesn't THINK anything has been decided?!?! That's Dave prevaricating big time as is his SOP. I have an idea. How about some parking? Since DAVE and buddies have decided to do away with MOST of the parking for the library by selling off the building on the south side of the Village Hall to some bank so they can build there and, once again, just like the Kmart/Dominick mess at 111th & Cicero, not create any revenue for the Village anyway.

If the Trustee are still arguing about the Chris Hospital Land, why not start keeping the "O" in Money in Oak Lawn, and start getting more business that will keep people shopping here and create venue like we need.. Here's thought, A "Trader Joe's" , could bring in from locals towns, Evergreen Park, Beverly, Chicago, Mt, Greenwood, Alsip. Own town deserves so much better than what we already have. There are many availabel spaces that the Trustee's are too busy arguing that they are missing the picutre here!

THOUGH YOUR IDEA IS A GOOD ONE MARY, I THINK IF YOU REALIZED WHAT THE TRAFFIC SITUATION WOULD BE WITH STORES, BANKS ETC, AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT YOU MIGHT CHANGE YOUR MIND. I THINK THE TRIBUTE TO VETERANS WOULD BE GREAT AND ALTHOUGH THERE WOULD BE TRAFFIC I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE AS BAD AS HAVING STORES THERE. I COULD BE WRONG.

I am no urban planner nor am I in real estate. That being said, I would like to see the original 100 year old store preserved and turned into a brew pub that makes and serves micro brews.

I think this is a great idea! If you've ever been out west to the Seattle or Portland area, there is a company called McMenamin's that uses old structures for their microbrewery restaurants. Local artists paint murals on the walls honoring the history of the structure. I've been to a few of the locations, but the Kennedy school is what stands out in my mind. I think this would be a fantastic concept for the property!

IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE AFFORDABLE CONDO'S FOR SENIORS AND DISABLED PEOPLE ON ONE OF THE SITES, ON THE OTHER SITE CONVENIENTLY LOCATED SHOPPING, SENIOR/DISABILITY CENTER AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICE.

How about something to generate revenue and lower my ever-rising property taxes.

1:42 pm on Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Living so close to the property, my opinion as to what should be built here is heavily biased. I suspect that to make the most revenue out of the land, whatever is built there is going to be taller than wider, unfortunately. Don Pointer's idea, or any concept of a green area, is nice - but likely unrealistic. The developer and Village want to make money.

Trader Joe's sounds like a plan, oh dear God please no more banks, med centers, or condos.we need revenue from the taxes on sales of product.

How about a good old restaurant, like Gibbons' or the old Dunlops? Some antique shops and vintage clothes stores, too. An old fashioned ice cream / candy shop? During the holidays there could be carolers and hot chocolate and roasted chestnuts in the area. In spring and summer fresh flower stalls, snow cones, cotton candy and a barber shop quartet at particular times. Those that would like a brew-ski can go into the restaurant, or right down the street for a cold one.
It would be different and draw people from all around us.

how about nothing. What's the matter with an abandoned lumber yard and some old manufacturing plant. If not, the strip club sounds pretty good. That would bring in a lot of traffic and be convenient for those that use the train from downtown. No we'll probably just end up with some dumb building where the women won't strip

We don't need a place like your suggesting. I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't want that and I wouldn't want to drive past such a place. Think of something better than a strip club.

Open spaces or a water retention pond. Even since those massive condos and new retail spaces went up, the flooding near 101st street is intolerable. No coincidence there. It almost never flooded. Since those buildings went up, every time we get more than an inch of rain, the streets close and I get over a foot of water in my yard. The little park down the street in underwater and all the bark nuggets float into yards over a block away. There have been times when I could not get home for two days because of street flooding and barricades.

How about a wishing well? It will be a fantastic place where naive readers of the Patch can meet and throw their pennies into a fountain and make a wish. A large marble horse with the "has been" or more appropriately named "never was" reporter sitting on top, would be a fascinating entryway into the downtown area. Oh it sounds like a dream. But so do all these other suggestions.
