Woman Shot During Oak Lawn Home Invasion

After someone shot at the home invaders with a shotgun, they fled and were chased by police. The cops caught three men. A fourth remains at large. The victim has been released from the hospital.

A 24-year-old woman was shot during a home invasion early Wednesday morning on the 10000 block of Buell Court.

Oak Lawn police responded to a 911 call of person shot around 12:15 a.m. The woman was shot in the arm by one of three armed men, police said in a press release.

Police said that a male relative of the wounded woman fired a shotgun at the three home invaders but missed. The men fled to a waiting blue SUV. Moments later, an Oak Lawn police officer tried to stop the SUV matching the description at 95th Street and Central Avenue.

A car chase ensued as the SUV fled and was pursued north on Harlem Avenue into Summit. The men jumped from the moving SUV at 61st Place and Harlem in Summit.

Two of the men were captured within minutes by a number of responding police agencies and the Chicago Police Department’s Air 1 helicopter.

Police found three guns where the SUV had been abandoned. Summit police captured a third suspect about two hours later in the same area. Another suspect, described as a male black in his early 20s, wearing jeans and a sports jersey with stripes, remains at large.

The investigation continues. The gunshot victim is the wife of the homeowner. She was treated and released from Advocate Christ Medical Center on Wednesday. There were no other injuries.

Hmmm. They were probably trying to steal her jewelry to make a stop at the Cash for Gold store. Thanks Oak Lawn.

I believe there was a shooting involving a stolden car on the same block a few months ago. I wonder if they are somehow related.

Great job to all the officers involved. I'm glad they got the suspects! One small point, isn't the "wife of the homeowner" also the homeowner? I'm glad the woman had family nearby. Just imagine if she were alone dealing with three thugs on her own?

The people living there own three convenience stores in Chicago. Thugs know this and look for easy money. No cameras, and I'm sure they didn't expect any guns. Let's find out the real story before we go accusing the owners of being drug dealers or the like.

Great! Your family members carry firearms too? Bet your neighbors are going to LOVE reading this!!! Do you have permits to carry? Most likely not since IL doesn't even have a conceal carry law.

Was she shot by the intruders or by the shot gun-wielding family member? Article doesn't specify. . . . .

Hey Freddi we all understand your family is the victim in the shooting. It is devastaing what happened to the family; a wife being shot and children going through that. HOWEVER, the big question we are raising is what is your family doing to attract this type of attention???? You yourself may not be the person at fault but someone in your family is and you are defending him.

If you live on this block and the block doesn't participate in Block Watch, perhaps you should look into it. The only way to stop this is to turn up the heat - report EVERYTHING to the police. Observe car and foot traffic on the block. Lots of unfamiliar cars cruising by, like they're looking for an address? Or briefly stopping? Lots of foot traffic in and out of the house? I have experience with this on my block in OL. Observation and persistence in reporting any and all suspicious activity to the proper authorities is key. In my case, it resulted in the arrests three people. The block has been quiet ever since.

Well the same question remains: Why does one family attract so much violence? Again there are many people running successful businesses who don't get followed home and attacked.

Oak Lawn Gal, I would love to see some statistics on your statement. Business owners getting targeted by patrons and current and past employees happens far more often then you think. ... And BTW, where is the Love Thy Neighbor in Oak Lawn.

Glen if we isolate it to Oak Lawn how many articles have you read in Patch where the same family was targeted twice and firearms were involved? I'm very happy no one was killed but if I were a neighbor of this family I'd be afraid for my safety. Wouldn't you?

Oak Lawn Gal, fear can be a very bad thing for a community. It leads people to very irrational conclusions and actions. I don't live next to this family. I only know what has been published and reported.

If in fact this family has been targeted, I as a neighbor would be keeping my eyes and ears open. I would have some compassion for these people. Very often homes will get targeted by criminals because they seem vulnerable. These types of business owners make good targets because they A. tend to have a lot of cash on them b. work odd hours.

I don't know of any Oak Lawn incidents. I do know of at least a half dozen in the Chicago area over the past year. In one incident, two employes held the owner of a west suburban restaurant hostage in his own home. They wanted ransom money for his safe return. This was in a neighborhood far nicer than Oak Lawn.

I have lived near “High Activity” houses or buildings through the years. This includes Oak Lawn. I do understand concerns of neighbors. I just hope that some people aren't jumping to wild conclusions that have no basis in reality. Wild conclusions do not keep your family safe.

Glen I would agree that fear can be a terrible thing for a community. Reading stories like this can lead people to consider moving out of Oak Lawn which is the last thing we want. While I'm sorry Freddi's family is going through this I think it's fair to question what's attracting criminal activity to this house. Maybe it is the business and the cash it attracts. If so they may want to consider options like moving to a gated community or perhaps looking into personal security. But when the bad guys have guns and the home owner has a gun there are all sorts of terrible scenarios that can be played out.

I draw the line on love thy neighbor when the same house is targeted by bad guys at least twice in 12 months. OL Gal is right - there is something attracting the bad guys. The answers are obvious however hard Patch and OL police try to downplay it. The neighbors need to get proactive and report any and all suspicious activity until the block is so hot with a police presence all the time that this crap stops.

RG, as far as I can tell from the article, she was shot by the intruders, not the OL police. Now you're spreading rumors. Stick to the facts.

Some people should learn how to read .. RG said she was shot by the intruders. He didn't say she was shot by the police. Read or keep quite.

He also said she's busy suing the Village inferring the Village and/or police had something to do with her being shot, rather than something her own 'family' is doing to attract suspicious characters. Perhaps you should read ALL the comments completely before telling people to be QUIET (and not quite), Rebecca.
