See who outpolled six others in voting during our Patch Athlete of the Week contest from Jan. 22-28.
Andrew boys bowling standout Josh Powell outpolled six others in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 22-28. He is now eligible for January Patch Athlete of the Month recognition.
Taylor Boardman, senior, forward, girls basketball, Lincoln-Way North. Boardman scored 25 points and led the Phoenix to a 54-39 victory over Thornwood in Southwest Suburban Red Conference action.
Johnny Finnin, senior, guard, boys basketball, Lincoln-Way Central. Finnin scored 22 points in the Knights’ 51-34 victory over Shepard. His emergence as a scorer has helped take some of the pressure off Central’s 6-8 Brad Foster.
Brandon Janda, senior, goalkeeper, boys club hockey, Stagg. Janda averaged more than 30 saves in games vs. Lyons Township (5-3 loss), Glenbard East (6-3 loss) and Andrew (6-3 win). He plays on a co-op team and ranks as one of the top goalies in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League. Players from Stagg, Shepard, Richards and Evergreen Park skate with the Cobras.
Joey Kopera, senior, boys bowling, Sandburg. Kopera bowled a 749 series in the final set and rallied to capture the IHSA boys bowling individual state championship Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. He finished with a pinfall total of 2,733 and a 227.8 average for 12 games.
Josh Powell, senior, boys bowling, Andrew. Powell led the T-Bolts to their third IHSA boys bowling state championship with a team-high pinfall total of 2,704. He averaged 225.3 for 12 games in competition at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. He placed fourth individually.
Tyler Ulis, sophomore, guard, boys basketball, Marian Catholic. Tyler was Terrific in two monster games for the Spartans. He scored 36 points in a 66-62 victory over West Allis Central (Wis.). And he rained down six 3-pointers and totaled 38 points in an 80-74 setback vs. St. Viator.
David Walker, junior, boys bowling, Richards. Walker’s team-high pinfall total of 2,574 led the Bulldogs in a ninth-place finish at the IHSA boys bowling state tournament. He finished 19th individually with an average of 214.5 for 12 games. And he led Richards to a three-week sweep of rival Oak Lawn in conference, sectional and state bowling events.
