The Moraine Valley Community College Foundation will enter the public phase of its “Foundation for Success” comprehensive campaign with a Donor Appreciation Reception on Thursday, January 24 at 3 p.m., in the Moraine Business and Conference Center, on campus, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills.
The highlight of the event will be the unveiling of a donor wall in Building M at 4 p.m. Some of the campaign’s key donors to date also will be recognized, including the Chicago Blackhawks organization, which has come forward with one of the campaign’s lead gifts of $250,000.
“The Donor Appreciation Reception gives us the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and celebrate those who have already come forward in support of the college’s campaign and to energize and inspire others to do the same,” said Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, college president. More than 300 individuals, corporations and foundations already have participated in the campaign.
The “Foundation for Success” campaign will fund numerous initiatives:
• Student scholarships
• Emergency assistance funds for students who are struggling to remain in school
• Grant funds for faculty and staff working on innovative projects that support
the college’s mission
• Funds to support the college’s arts and cultural resources and other programs
that enrich both campus and community
• Capital projects
One current capital project the “Foundation for Success” campaign will help fund is Moraine Valley’s Health Education and Wellness Center, which broke ground on January 10. The center is a $34.5 million, 115,000 square
foot health and wellness facility that features a four-lane lap pool, three
full-size basketball courts, a fitness center area, indoor walking track, group
exercise studios, locker rooms, and an area for a healthcare partner to offer
health-related programs and services to community members.
The Moraine Valley Community College Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that supports the college faculty, staff and students. It promotes and financially supports college programs and provides scholarships and financial assistance to students while exercising prudent management and investment of donor funds.

I'll admit I'm confused. From where is the $34.5 million coming? Is it coming from the extraordinarily high tuition increases with which students are burdened? Is it coming through some "backdoor" bond sale for which the repayment will be added directly to tax bills without voter approval? There was no referendum to fund this boondoggle.
Another concern is whether the Foundation has stopped using charitable donations for political purposes. during the ridiculous $90 million overbuilding project of a few years ago, the Foundation gave a six figure donation to support the referendum, and there was a possibility of the losing their non-profit status.
Has this abuse stopped??

"Emergency assistance funds for students who are struggling to remain in school"
Wow. The patronage abuse potential for this is HUGE!
Based on what we've seen from the "legislative scholarship" abuse, could these funds be used to give "payback" to supporters of the political party that dominates local politics and the MVCC Board?
