Sward School 60th Anniversary Celebration!
Please join us in a walk down Memory Lane with former students, teachers, and parents!
On Wednesday November 7, 2012 at Carl A. Sward School (9830 S. Brandt Ave/Oak Lawn) 5:30pm-9pm. This event is open to Sward Graduates from 1952-2004 and Sward parents and teachers from 1952-2012.
There will be a box dinner ($5 per person) from 5:30p-7:15pm and then a program from 7:45pm to 9pm.

This notice made me think back on my days at Sward. I'm sure most of my old teachers have probably left this earthly world, but they did an incredible job educating and shaping us into productive future citizens.
Does anyone else out there remember Miss Neaylon, Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Lord, Mrs. Kasang, Mrs. Drummond, Mr. Kozul, and the inimitable Principal, Mrs. Beckley?

I loved Mrs. Drummond! To this day, there has not been one music teacher at a grade school that had the ability to teach so many youngsters how to sing in different pitches so well. I was in her chorus and then special chorus in 8th grade and I will always remember her rendition of the Silent Night that the Special chorus got to sing alongside the rest of the school. Also, at our 8th grade graduation we all had to sing Morning Has Broken and it was the most beautiful sounding song with all the altos, sopranos and tenors. Can't remember if we had bass or baritone but probably. It was awesome!! She was Awesome! She took us to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra hall and we got to hear them play, and I will never forget the Kettle drummers in that big hall. What a sound! We also got to sing in front of Chicago folks in either the Daley center or a museum. That was so cool. I think it was Christmas time, because I do remember there were Christmas trees. She was the best.
Oh I had Mrs. Lord for 7th or 8th grade homeroom and math of course. I was so afraid of her. Miss Neaylon always called me by my sisters name, because she really liked my sister and I was nothing like her.
I remember Mrs. Pearson caught me running in the hallway coming in from recess and she made me walk up and down the hallway counting the tiles until she said to stop. She forgot about me and I missed almost a whole class I was supposed to be in. And Mrs. Beckley. Bulldog Beckley.

About Mrs. Beckley, I had run out of characters in last post. I remember one year the whole school was lined up on both sides of wall to practice songs for one of the holidays. And she didn't like how we answered YES. She thought the kids were making fun of the word Yes by adding more esses or something. She spent about 15 minutes making us say Yes to her liking. I saw her smile once. ONLY ONCE. just kidding..but she wasn't very nice to kids I didn't think.

I did not-but my inlaws do. You probably know my husband David or my brother inlaw, Jimmy. What year did you graduate? Are you planning to go to the 60th Anniversary Celebration? Great memories, MM, and I agree about Mrs. Drummond. I spent kindergarten through 8th grade walking the halls of Sward, and at my graduation we sang "Halls of Ivy". I was also in the chorus from grade 5-8...we were the original "Glee" kids before it became cool! Christmastime was magical. I remember each grade working on a class ornament and gathering at the main entrance to decorate the school tree. The song programs were beautiful, and I remember the whole school coming in at the end for Silent Night, with the angels on stage and the descant. Can you imagine a Christmas program or a school tree in a public school today?! Do you also remember the "Spring Show" that took place on a Thursday and Friday night in April? Fun times and warm memories.
Quiz time. Who was known for the following words/phrases:
"ha-a-l-f note....two-eights, two-eights, foursixteenthsfoursixteenths..."
"Alright you birds, you better start working!"
"I think we have a spastic neuron among us."
BONUS: (This teacher's name has not been mentioned. She was my kindergarten teacher and my 7th grade science teacher)
Who had a sign in their class that read, "This is a LABORatory, not a labORATORY."
This same teacher would frequently exclaim, "It's too talky in here!"

A side note and another testament to Mrs. Drummond. When I entered OLCHS, I signed up for Freshman Boys Chorus. Our class of 25 or so was about half Sward graduates; pretty amazing when you consider that 5 grade schools fed into OL, and also that by this time it was not cool to sing in chorus, especially for guys.

I just found out about the celebration and I am going to have to try to change some previous commitments to get there. I am coming in from southern Illinois and would not make it there until about 7:30. By the way, for my classmates, I am the kid who always had sit sit next to Mrs. Gunsinger so she could wack me in the head with her "hand" graduated in 1969. G

Please contact Sward School ASAP to register for this event. I think that although the registration was due by 10-31-12, they will probably let you still join. Thanks for making the effort and the drive to come to the event.
