Business Comings & Goings: Francesca's on 95th Honors Teachers

Gloria Jean's Coffees Unveils its 'Coffee House of the Future' at Westfield Chicago Ridge Mall.

Francesca’s on 95th is showing its appreciation for educators by asking students to nominate their favorite teacher and by offering teachers 15 percent off their check when dining at Francesca’s between now and July 1. “We wanted to show our appreciation to teachers,” said Francesca’s general manager Paul Frencl. Only one 15 percent off deal per table is valid, Frencl said, but the discount is good for everyone at the table. It also can’t be combined with other offers. Teachers just have to show a school ID to qualify for the discount, which is available from now to July 1. Francesca’s also wants students to honor their teachers. The restaurant is asking students to submit their favorite teacher to Francesca’s Facebook page by this Friday…

Switch Off: Incandescent Bulbs Soon Will Burn Out for Good

As a result of U.S. government energy-efficiency standards, traditional incandescent light bulbs are being phased out. Local electrical contractor Tom Sullivan says consumers need to be educated so they can make the right choices moving forward.

Don’t be surprised if some of those old jokes about how many blankety-blanks it takes to change a light bulb bounce back into the comedic mainstream of life. No kidding. The job is not as easy as it used to be, not anymore. “The consumer needs to be educated on what it is they are buying and to find out if the new apples they are buying are equal to the old oranges they used to buy,” said Tom Sullivan of Sullivan Electrical Contractors and Epic Lighting Solutions in Oak Forest. “Because you can’t get the old oranges any more.” Sullivan’s comments come in direct response to energy-savings measures being implemented by the U.S. government. As a result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, traditional incandescent light bulbs …

Chowdown Showdown

Where's the Beef: Who Makes the Best Italian Beef Sandwich?

This week, Patch sought out the best Italian beef in the Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos area for our ongoing series “Chowdown Showdown.”

Welcome to “Chowdown Showdown,” a weekly feature where we take one type of food and ask readers to nominate their favorite places in Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos. This week we chowed down on the South Side favorite--the Italian Beef. We tallied the votes on each respective Patch site and Facebook page. Real South Siders know their Italian beef sandwiches, and these three proved worthy competitors. Evergreen Park Patch -  All hail king of the Italian Beef! Pappys was my absolute favorite. We got a few suggestions, including Rosangela's, who was in our Patch Pizza Playoffs, and Souzy's, but this one won the crown. You want a South Sider's Beef? Chow down on Pappys beef, the way South Siders like it: dipped with sweet and hot peppers…
