Can Peloquin’s Votes Outside the City Beat Rush’s Chicago Numbers?

Don Peloquin may have taken in more votes in the suburbs during last week’s primary election, but that number didn’t come close to what Bobby Rush pulled within Chicago city limits.

The 1st Congressional District covers an almost comically diverse landscape. Starting on the north end at 26th Street and Michigan Avenue, down Martin Luther King Drive to the Dan Ryan at the Skyway and further south, including neighborhoods just east and west of the highway. But the new district then continues down I-57, stretching past Harlem Avenue to LaGrange Road, continuing south and west to Highway 53, all the way to the 2,300-population town of Elwood. All residents in this area will have their interests represented in Congress by either Democrat Incumbent 1st District Rep. Bobby Rush or Republican Blue Island Mayor Don Peloquin. Rush handily won far more votes in Chicago alone with 55,196 votes to Peloquin’s 599 as of Tuesday. But…

It's very difficult to defeat an incumbent in the US, especially in an area dominated by Chicago Democratic politics. I will, nevertheless, vote for Mayor Peloquin. As a Tinley Park resident I've never seen Rep. Rush hold a town hall meeting in my area, and I have never received a response from his office whenever I've written; not even the usual form letter. I'm simply ignored. Bobby Rush has …   more ›

Bellar Faces Cunningham Again in 18th Senate District Race

Bellar won Tuesday’s primary with 9,757 votes, compared to opponent Ricardo Fernandez with 3,401 votes, or 74 percent. Bellar commended Fernandez for “his efforts to make things better in Illinois.” She described their interactions as “friendly all the way through.” Moving forward on to the next race, Bellar said she’ll be focusing on issues people expressed concerns to her about while she was campaigning before the primary. “We need jobs…

Andrea, You seem to have advanced knowledge of the political scene. I have been speaking up because I knew Fran from Grammar School, liked how she conducted her campaign (no negativity that I saw or heard), and that when I ran into her at my polling place on election day she was the same, smart, tough, driven girl I remembered from years ago with a clear moral center, a clear desire to serve the …   more ›

They Got Out and Voted: Southland Voters Sound Off on the Prez and Congress

Turnout for Tuesday's primary was low. Patch editors caught up with poll-goers adamant about exercising their right to step into the ballot boxes. What brought them to the polls?

Although turnout seemed low throughout the area, many south suburban residents cast ballots because of races for the GOP presidential nomination and congressional districts that were redrawn last year. For some voters, their selection in the Republican presidential primary was a matter of finding "the least of all evils." Stephen Buretz, of Frankfort, said that man was Rick Santorum. "I don't know," Buretz said. "He was the best of the worst. I wasn't decided until I stepped up there." Tinley Park election judge Barbara Lavey said she thinks the primary's turnout was hampered by voters having to declare their candidacy. She also said she believed that many democrats didn't feel they had to show up at the ballot box. "It's annoying, but it'…

Lipinski Wins Huge in Primary Over Baqai

With nearly 90 percent of the vote, incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) has easily cruised by challenger Farah Baqai.

Incumbent Democratic 3rd District Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) easily won the Democratic nomination to run for his fifth term in Congress on Tuesday, defeating challenger Farah Baqai by a vote margin of nearly 9-1. Faqai was challenging the moderate Lipinski from the left, but stood virtually no chance against a Lipinski name that is a perennial force in Cook County Democratic politics. “Tomorrow we go back to work—the work never ends,” Lipinski told supporters in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge. “I’m working to make sure that people who do bring a hard day’s work [and] who play by the rules get rewarded. That’s the most important thing. That’s what I stand for, and that’s why today we’ve come through with a big victory with your help.” …

Southland Savvy

GOP Hopefuls Bypass the Southland

On primary night, Mitt Romney made it as far south as Wheaton, where he visited with children from the neighborhood. Who was the last GOP presidential candidate to visit the Southland? Tell us and win a Patch t-shirt.

Mitt Romney, awaiting the results of Illinois' Republican presidential primary, stopped in Wheaton for an unpublicized private reception Tuesday night. Romney greeted children and other neighbors who gathered outside waving American flags and chanting “Mitt for President!” as he arrived. Wheaton Patch editor Charlotte Eriksen caught up with him. Neighbors said they received notice of the event earlier this week. Romney then headed to Schaumburg for his Illinois election night party. Romney also stopped in Vernon Hills and Rosemont during the campaign.  Newt Gingrich made a campaign stop in Barrington, and also visited Lake in the Hills and Palatine. Rick Santorum put in appearances in Arlington Heights and Mundelein. None of the candidates…
