Local Area Under Winter Storm Watch

Wintry mix of rain, ice, sleet and snow may glaze up roads this weekend, National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch, effective 6 p.m. Dec. 21 until 5 p.m. Dec. 22 for Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy and Will Counties, including the cities of Wheaton, Joliet, Morris and Chicago.

A wintry mix is forecast for Saturday, beginning with a light freezing rain before noon, and then morphing into snow and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain for the local area for the remainder of the day and continuing overnight in Sunday morning.

The weather service is warning residents of a "possible significant snow and sleet accumulation by Sunday afternoon, which could make travel dangerous." The wintry mix Saturday night could also result in an icy glaze on roads, according to weather service officials.
