Rep. Lipinski Runs in First Midway 5K

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) participated Sunday in the “Midway Fly Away 5K,” the first ever 5K race held on the grounds of Midway Airport.  The event benefitted Special Olympics Chicago, whose mission is to provide sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In Chicago, nearly 5,000 athletes participate in its programs throughout the year.

“What a thrill to be joined by hundreds of people who came out on a drizzly morning to take part in this historic event on the airfield of Midway Airport. I run in many races throughout the year, but this 5K was especially significant to me because of the many memories I have of Midway. Growing up in the Garfield Ridge and Clearing communities, I used to ride my bike around the airfield perimeter at a time when the airport was nearly empty and struggling to survive. Today, it is thriving and has never been busier. That this event was able to raise money and call attention to a cause as important as Special Olympics Chicago made this race particularly gratifying. I look forward to more events in the future that showcase Midway Airport, one of the finest airports in the world.”
