A Rain of Golf Balls

Oak Lawn Rotary Club raises $20,000 for 9/11 monument by dropping 2,000 golf balls from a helicopter over Stony Creek Golf Course.

No, that wasn't golf ball-sized hail falling on Wednesday afternoon. Those were actual golf balls.

The to be held in Oak Lawn went off almost without a hitch. The Oak Lawn Rotary Club sold so many golf balls that the two-seater helicopter it hired from Lansing to fly over Stony Creek and drop the balls on the practice green had to make three passes.

The golf ball drop was part of efforts to raise funds for -- including beams from the fallen World Trade Center.

Residents purchased the numbered golf balls for a chance to win cash prizes. The balls were dropped during the Oak Lawn Chamber's annual golf outing.

D229 Supeintendent Michael Riordan's ball landed closet to the pin, winning him the grand prize of $5,000, as well as one of the smaller $250 prizes. Riordan's brother, Brian, came in second place winning $2,500. The Riordans also won several gift baskets. Somone really needs to remind the chamber not to invite the Riordans next year. (Just kidding.)

The Rotary Club raised $20,000 in the golf ball flyover, bringing the club within striking distance of its goal to raise $100,000 for a nice installation.

and is hard at work welding at the Oak Lawn Public Works building at 5532 W. 98th St.

As for Patch, it was a beautiful day to sit outside and mind the beer hole.
