Cult of Chick-Fil-A: Year of Free Chicken Brings Out Eager Campers

Patch asks: "What's the appeal?"

Chick-fil-A addicts came from all over the Midwest to be the first 100 in line to receive a year's supply of Chick-fil-A meals at the new Chick-fil-A restaurant opening Thursday morning in Chicago Ridge.
"We're a cult," a woman from Toledo, OH, said, her second time at a "First 100" event.
Camped out in the asphalt parking lot of the new restaurant at Ridgeland and 95th Street, the 100 fans, some with their young children in tow, showed up at 5:30 a.m. the day before for a chance to receive free coupons for the famous deep-fried chicken sandwiches.
The coupons, good for a Chick-fil-A sandwich, medium sized beverage and medium waffle fries, were to be handed out to those hearty enough to camp out for 24 hours until the doors opened on Thursday morning.
The tradition of camping out the day before a Chick-fil-A grand opening began in 2003, when hundreds stood overnight waiting for the chain's first standalone restaurant in Arizona to open, hence the beginning of the "First 100" event.
Chick-fil-A expected to give away $30,000 in free food on Thursday.
Patch asked: "What's the appeal?"
The answer, "We just like chicken."
