Oak Lawn Firefighters Run for the Kids in Annual 5K

Oak Lawn's bravest strap on their running shoes in sixth annual "Running for Hope" 5K run.

Members of the Oak Lawn firefighters and paramedics union were among the 2,000 runners and walkers that participated in the sixth annual Running for Hope 5K Run/Walk on Sunday.

Local 3405 fields a 5K team that participates in various runs benefiting such area non-profits as Westside Baseball, the Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn, Relay for Life and sponsors an annual duck race where proceeds are donated to a designated local charity.

Runners and walkers from throughout the Chicago region organized teams for current and former patients at Advocate Children's Hospital or in memory of loved ones that passed away.

Proceeds from the race will support the Ronald McDonald House in Oak Lawn and the pediatric bereavement program at Advocate Children’s.

Dr. Jason Canner, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Advocate Children’s said he anticipated the annual race exceeding this year’s fundraising goal.

“We are truly grateful to the runners and walkers who are participating and have participated in this event and to the many volunteers who have staffed it,” Canner said in a press release.
