Oak Lawn Garden Walk to Feature Diverse Landscapes

By Mary Kate Brogan

The Oak Lawn Garden Club will host its 2013 Garden Walk this Sunday, June 23 from 1 to 5 p.m. The walk will showcase five gardens at different homes in the village of Oak Lawn, and refreshments will be served at 5353 W. 89th Street.

Garden Walk coordinator Marci Stritch says that each garden on this year’s walk will be unique and different.

“Some (gardeners) are new at it, and they’re dabbling but they’re doing a great job,” Stritch says. “They just love the gardening. It’s good for your soul, good for your mind. What can I say? It’s very rewarding.”

The top finishers in the 2012 Beautiful Yard Contest, which was judged in early June of last year, will be featured in the walk. Last year’s winners, Geri and Dan Toma, are both excited to have others experience the fruits of their labors.

“We’ve been planting the seeds and watching the flowers grow,” Geri says. “I’m excited to know that our job, as far as creation goes, is completed.”

Geri says she hopes people will get the same relaxing and tranquil feeling in their garden that she and her husband receive when they are enjoying the garden themselves.

The Garden Club will be raffling off a deluxe gift basket, and the first 100 adults to arrive will receive a free carnation.

Tickets are an $8 donation to the Garden Club, and can be purchased at Saunoris Nursery, 6000 W. 111th St., and at the Village Green Gazebo on the day of the event.
