Procession and Funeral Planned for Fallen Local Marine

The body of Marine Cpl. Conner Lowry who was killed in Afghanistan last week is due home this Friday. Those wishing to pay their respects are invited to line the procession route.

Funeral arrangements and a solemn procession are planned for a young Marine killed in Afghanistan last week.

Lowry was conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Community members are encouraged to line the procession route and pay their respects when the fallen marine passes through Oak Lawn this Friday.

Lowry’s body is due to arrive at 8 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Midway Airport. A procession will follow from Midway Airport south on Cicero Avenue to 103rd Street, east on 103rd Street to Pulaski Road, then north past Brother Rice High School, east on 99th Street, past Mother McAuley High School.

From Mother McAuley, the procession will continue south on Central Park Avenue past Queen of Martyrs School and then east on 103rd Street toward St. John Fisher School and Church.

Students and staff at the schools will line the streets for Lowry’s procession home. Community members are also invited to line the processiona route in a show of respect. Organizers suggest people be present along the route with American flags by 8:45 a.m.

Cpl. Lowry will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. John Fisher Church at 10234 S. Washtenaw Ave. in Chicago.

A funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial is at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Alsip.

Lowry grew up in Beverly and was a 2006 graduate of He enlisted in the Marines in 2008 while a student at the University of Iowa.  

Throughout the day and evening Tuesday, more than 2,000 had liked a Facebook page set up in Cpl. Lowry's memory by friends. Many left such tearful tributes as “Handsome lad and hero :(,,,,,(tears).”  “i still can't believe the big guy is gone... he was one of our boot camp platoon's favorites. rest easy, brother,” and “RIP Hero.”
