The Need is Greater This Year

Worth Township is bringing some holiday hope to struggling families this Christmas.

"In years past, there's never been more need than what I've seen in these times," says Arlene Sladek, executive administrator for Worth Township.

As Christmas draws near, some parents are struggling just to provide the basics for their families, let alone Christmas gifts. But, there's hope for these families. With your generous donations, you can help Worth Township make this season bright for your neighbors in need.

How and Where to Give

The Worth Township Youth Commission is sponsoring the "Christmas Care" program for families that find themselves in financial difficulty this holiday season. Support this worthy cause by donating new, unwrapped toys for children from infant age to 13 years.

"For the older kids, we accept monetary donations and we will shop for things for them," Sladek said. "People always give for the little ones and often forget the older children need gifts too."

Families in need can submit an application for assistance at the Worth Township offices, located at 11601 S. Pulaski in Alsip, between the hours of 9 am – 4:30 pm. Applications will be taken until Dec. 10. Toy donations can also be brought to this location, from 9am – 4:30 pm until Dec. 10.

When the weather outside is frightful, a warm coat can be so delightful. Worth Township has been supplying coats to those who need them this fall and winter, and as quickly as they come—they quickly go.

"We've had tables full of coats six rows deep, and by late afternoon, many tables are already bare," Sladek mentions. "We still need kids' coats, we get lots for adults, but I haven't seen many little ones."

You can help someone brave the cold Chicago winter by donating a gently used coat. Consider purging that cluttered coat closet and letting some of those unworn coats and jackets get some use this winter. Coats are being collected now through Dec. 31.  Families in need can pick up coats at the Worth Township Office Building on the 2nd floor.

One more way to help a family this Christmas is by donating to the Worth Township Food Pantry. This year, the pantry shelves rarely stay stocked.

"We have 152,000 residents [in our township], so just imagine the need out there," Sladek said.

A list of acceptable food items is located on the Worth Township website. Non-perishable foods such as canned and boxed goods are always welcome, but items like baby food and personal hygiene products are needed as well.

"If every person could just give one thing, we would really make a difference," said Sladek.
