College and Career Fair draws record crowd

More than 1,000 students and parents, a new record, participated in the College and Career Fair sponsored by District 218 last week. The video offers a sense of the event's scope.

Featuring well over 100 admissions representatives from colleges and universities, technical and vocational schools, and the military, the fair also included nearly 40 professionals. Students and parents could speak with architects, nurses, engineers, police officers, teachers, plumbers and many others.

The video features Richards High School graduate Kristin Weibel (Class of 2005) at one of the booths.

Kristin earned a degree in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University. Today, she works for Exelon (the company that owns the nuclear power plants that serve Illinois) as a Radiation Protection Technical Specialist.

She works in the Radiation Protection department at Braidwood Generating Station and manages the dosimetry program. Each person on-site wears a DLR (dosimeter of legal record) that collects the radiation dose they receive over a 3-month time period.

Kristin coordinates the change-out of the workers’ dosimeters, interfacing with the dosimetry vendor, and performing analyses of workers’ radiation doses. She also oversees the oversight of the radiological air sampling program and the alpha monitoring program, which both involve the quantification of different types of radiation within the plant.
