“One Skate at a Time,” the benefit organized by Richards High School graduate and U.S. Figure Skating Men’s Junior silver medalist Jordan Moeller, raised more than $10,000 on April 5 for a summer camp for children and teenagers in treatment for cancer.
Moeller first organized One Skate after learning that the niece of his math teacher, Debbie Swanson, had survived a scare with cancer. Swanson explained how the camp helped Julia Fischer, her niece and junior at the time at Shepard High School.
Children’s Oncology Services (COSI) sponsors the camp, One Step at a Time, to provide emotional and social support for young people fighting cancer. The camp provides fun, friendship and support in a safe and nurturing environment.

Cancer treatment can cheat children of experiences that most take for granted. The camp supplies a diversion from illness; unconditional acceptance from those who understand what patients experience; information, answers and validation; reasons to adopt a positive, fighting attitude; memories that comfort when times are hard; and, hope for the future.
Southwest Ice Arena donated the ice time, which provided a huge boost, for this event. The Village of Oak Lawn honored Moeller this week for his efforts in support of One Step at a Time.

This year’s featured performers included Moeller; Paige Rydberg, the U.S. Figure Skating Association silver medalist in the girls novice division; and, Shepard sophomore Diana Garcia, the U.S. Figure Skating Association Upper Great Lakes regional silver medalist.
In its three years, this fund raiser has generated more than $20,000 for One Step at a Time.
