The holidays at Richards: The Miracle Tree

Getting into National Honor Society requires a lot of studying.  Staying there requires a lot of studying, plus a lot of giving.

Aside from maintaining a grade point average of 3.6 on a scale of 4.0 students must volunteer. Service, in fact, represents one of the four pillars of NHS along with scholarship, leadership, and character.

For more than two decades, NHS students at Richards have sponsored The Miracle Tree.  The holiday tradition provides gifts to children of underprivileged families.

Staff members at Childs School in Robbins provide a list of gift ideas.  NHS members write down the requests on the backs of paper ornaments and then decorate a paper tree with them.  Richards teachers then buy gifts.

NHS students stay after school to wrap the gifts to prepare for the traditional holiday party.  The party includes snacks, crafts, and music.
