Those looking to get in on the holiday hiring push may want to act early, according to Challenger, Gray and Christmas’ annual holiday hiring forecast for 2013.
This year’s holiday hiring levels may not hit those of 2012, when 751,800 were added to retailers’ payrolls, Challenger said.
Still, 700,000 seasonal jobs are anticipated to be added in 2013, with the bulk of holiday hiring decisions expected to be made in October, the Chicago-based outplacement consulting firm projected.
“Holiday job seekers should start their search by contacting friends already working in establishments that could need holiday workers. You should also target establishments of which you are a frequent customer,” said CEO John A. Challenger of the Chicago-based outplacement firm.
“If there are certain retail outlets where you would prefer to work, start going there when business is low and try to make a connection with a manager or assistant manager. The key is separating oneself from the pile of applicants the store will see between now and Halloween,” Challenger concluded.
WAL-MART SEASONAL ASSOCIATES
Wal-Mart has announced that it is hiring 55,000 seasonal associates for the 2013 holiday season. In addition, the big box retailer said it would be transitioning 35,000 existing temporary works to part-time employees, and 35,000 part-time employees to full-time. Department store-operator Kohl’s expects to add 53,000 seasonal associates including retail and “credit greeters” this holiday season, up slightly from last year. To work at Kohl’s, you must be at least 17. We saw openings for assistant managers in Crestwood, Aurora and Batavia while perusing the department store’s corporate website. TARGET SEASONAL TEAM MEMBERS
Target announced that it would be hiring 70,000 season team members this holiday season, down 20 percent from 2012. The reason for that is to offer more year-round employees additional hours, according to the company blog, BullsEye. Last year, 34,000 of temporary seasonal hires were hired as permanent year-round team members. To work at Target you must be at least 16.
