OLHMS Film Screening of "Girl Rising"

Recently, a group of students in Mrs. Rayson's Language Arts class at OLHMS decided to take their normal studies to the next level.

A group of 11 eighth grade students are studying adversity and had watched a preview for the independent film, "Girl Rising." The documentary sheds light on young girls throughout the world who lack access to simple basic rights like an access to education.

Mrs. Rayson’s students have arranged a screening of the film through hard work and determination. Their work included the creation of graphics, posters, interviews, a newscast, and grant writing to the D123 Education Foundation.

What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Girl Rising is an informative, educational documentary about the lives of impoverished girls living in countries where education for girls isn't a priority. Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Richard Robbins (Operation Homecoming) and narrated by A-list stars including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Selena Gomez, the film explores the dangerous inequalities that girls and young women face in parts of the world. Some of the segments deal with intense and disturbing topics including slavery, child marriage, rape, and human trafficking. There are matter-of-fact discussions of these issues, but nothing graphic is shown. - "Girl Rising." Common Sense. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Nov. 2013.
