McAuley Volleyball Team Greeted With A Champion's Homecoming

Watch the reception Mother McAuley students gave their state championship winning volleyball team on their first day back at school.

Mother McAuley students in plaid skirts lined the front entrance and hallways of the school waiting for the return of the newly-crowned state volleyball champions Monday morning.

It was a celebration long in the making for the Mighty Macs who have been racking up state appearances and playoff wins season after season, but haven't captured the big one in nine years.

The excitement was evident as the team disembarked from their police-escorted bus and proceeded around the school in the traditional cart parade.

"Finishing third last year definitely gave them a taste in their mouth for what it's like to be a part of a state tournament and what it takes to get there," said head coach Jen DeJarld. "I think it started last November when we got home. They are just a really focused, motivated group."

For the players, the opportunity to bring the championship trophy home to McAuley is part of an experience they will always cherish. From the cheering students and teachers to candy-trowing players this was a true moment of school spirit.

"It's really awesome just to see the whole school supporting us and that everyone is behind us," said team co-captain Jenny Phelan. "McAuley is built on tradition and we are just happy to keep the tradition going."
