What to do with all this paper?

As parents, we receive a tree’s worth of paper every year from our children’s schools, but the end of school year comes with a particularly large infusion as desks and lockers are cleaned out. Now parents have to figure out what happens to it.  So the question I get asked all the time is, “What do I do with all this paper?”

My response is, “Why keep it?”

No, really. I mean it. When you think about the future, you and your child will only want to compare writing, drawing, math and stories from year to year. So what I tell my clients is to store all the year’s papers in a plastic bin. This way if there is ever a question during the year whether an assignment was turned in, you will be able to refer to the box.

Now is the time of year to clear the box.  Sort and separate the contents into three piles: art/stories, math, and English/reports.  Go through each pile and see which you like and which your child likes. Try to get everything you keep into a single manila envelope - this way you will have one envelope per year.
