OLCHS Celebrates Culture

Oak Lawn Community High School values its diversity.  One way to celebrate culture in its community is through the Global Society Fest.  This year’s Global Society Fest was the collected effort of many staff members and students.  Several events took place during the week of February 18-21.

On Tuesday, an international food tasting kicked off the celebration.  During their lunch periods, students sampled food from Argentina and the Middle East. Throughout the week students were challenged with a Find the Flag scavenger hunt in which they searched for flags from around the world throughout the school.  On Thursday, the International Club hosted a World Wear Fashion Show in the Little Theater during all lunch periods.  World Wear is a global style show featuring clothing and music representing the cultures of Vietnam, Japan, China, Mexico, Senegal, and Ireland.  International Club moderator Pat Land reflected, “Our students did an outstanding job of showcasing and sharing their cultures.  It was a fun way to learn about customs and costumes.” Finally, on Friday, Latin and African American dance performances took place in the gym.  Students expressed the significance of their heritage through spirited moves and music.
