Hero Who Died in Texas Tragedy Will be Laid to Rest in South Suburbs

Kevin Sanders, a 1997 Marist grad who grew up in nearby Palos Hills, died in the Waco fertilizer plant explosion. He leaves behind a widow and infant son.

A native of Palos Hills and former Plainfield resident, Kevin Sanders was among the first responders killed in an explosion as they battled a fire at fertilizer plant in West, Texas, near Waco on April 18. 

“He died doing what he loved to do by serving and protecting others and will be forever remembered as a hero,” according to the obituary for Sanders, 33. Husband to wife Sarah and father to infant son Reeve, Sanders grew up in Palos Hills and graduated from Marist High School in 1997.

A service to honor Sanders is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Plainfield Fire Protection District headquarters, 23748 W. 135th St. in Plainfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 8245 W. 111th St. in Palos Hills.
