7-Eleven Robbers Nabbed After Crashing Car Into Tree, Cops Say

This story has been updated to reflect charges filed against two Chicago residents believed to be responsible for an armed robbery Sunday afternoon in Oak Lawn.

A police chase that spanned Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park, ended when two men accused of robbing a convenience store crashed their car into a tree in the Beverly neighborhood.

Clifton Hall Jr., 50, and Clifton B. Moore, 39, both of Chicago were charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm.

Police said that Hall walked into the 7-Eleven store at 10441 S. Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn around 2:29 p.m. Sunday armed with a gun.

Hall allegedly pointed a gun at an employee and ordered him to open the register. Police said that Hall helped himself to money and mulitiple packs of cigarettes, then took off out of the store on foot.

Police said the man ran around the corner to where Moore waited in a light blue Cadillac.  An alert citizen saw the alleged robber jump into a car where the wheel man was waiting, and called Oak Lawn police.

A few minutes Evergreen Park police officer heard the Oak Lawn dispatch and spotted the Caddy traveling eastbound on 103rd Street past Kedzie Ave. Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn police gave chase when the car refused to stop.

Police pursued the vehicle with the alleged robbery suspects until the car crashed into a tree near 103rd Street and Longwood Drive in Beverly.

The two men got out of the car at the crash site and tried to escape on foot a police news release said.

Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park police quickly apprehended them and took them into custody. The accused robbers are being held in the Oak Lawn jail.

Division Chief Michael Kaufmann of the Oak Lawn Police Department said that police officers found a gun in the car, along with money and smokes stolen in the alleged robbery.

A witness to the robbery identified Hall as the suspect, police said. The investigation continues.

Kaufmann said it was too early to tell if the men were involved in other armed robberies in the area.

“You do one armed robbery and in many cases you get multiple ones. We’re looking at all aspects,” Kaufmann said.  “It’s not likely they woke up one day and decided to commit their first armed robbery."

Both men are due in bond court Monday morning at the Cook County criminal courts building at 26th and Califonia.

No one was hurt in alleged robbery or subsequent police chase.
