Alleged Gang Member Issued Village Citation for Possession

Cops want to know why a 22-year-old man was hanging around a bunch of eighth-graders.

Police said a man known to them as a Latin Kings gang member was charged with possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis on April 17.

Miguel A. Martinez, 22, of the 9700 block of South Tripp Avenue, was spotted around 5:30 p.m. at 97th Street and Karlov, among a group of eighth-grade girls, reports said.

When police asked Martinez why a 22-year-old man would be hanging around a bunch of eighth-graders, Martinez said he was there to walk his cousin home.

Police said Martinez volunteered that he was carrying cannabis in his pants after he was asked if he had anything illegal, police said.

Police said Martinez was cooperative but denied being a gang member. Martinez was issued a village citation for possession of pot and has a May 17 hearing.
