I'm not sure "two male blacks" is the correct term here. "two black males" would have been better, "two african-american males" would have been best. Not trying to take away from the story, rather that took me out of the story and if you're going to present this as a serious news outlet - which I am a fan of - the writing should reflect that.

Shut up.

I agree with you Lisa

What leads you to believe the men were of African decent? They could just as easily be Jamaicans. In any event this is a description of the offenders not a commentary on their ethnicity. Two male blacks is the correct phrase in this situation.
Mike October 17, 2012 at 06:26 pm
Either way you slice it, they are black. Feel better?

Black males, male blacks.... really whats the difference. They were gun toting thugs, or is that too offensive? Let them put a gun in your face and we'll see what you call them then.

All the language etiquette that is required to give the description of two hoods somehow has overshadowed the fact that this armed robbery could have resulted in someone getting seriously injured or worse. Can we be a little less sensitive and catch these two black, possibly African, possibly Jamacan, possibly American guys ?

I agree with you Lisa, SHUT UP ANDREA!! Regardless who or what these two hoodlums are they robbed a store in our neighborhood. I hope they are caught and punished to the fullest.

Andrea,
I am following AP Style, the standard for news organizations. Male blacks is an acceptable term. There are many people of color whose country/continent of origin is not Africa.

I apologize to our readers for the comment left by "John Doe" that contained an ethnic slur. I question if John Doe is my ex-boyfriend, who was also a jerk.

I third that, Lisa

I agree Joe W. There are also White Africans, that may be African Americans too.

Male black is the standard form of description for law enforcement and emergency services. Sex of suspect, then color or race of subject. Quick clear description, then police receive further.

I copied the pictures and posted them to my facebook page and asked people to do the same. Wouldn't this be a great way to find these guys quicker. Facebook is viral...it will eventually get to the right people who recognize these idiots. I wrote, "This is a scum bag who robbed a T-mobile store a few blocks from where my daughter lives in Oak Lawn. He and another guy pulled guns on the employees there and made them lay on the floor. Call the Oak Lawn Police if you recognize this person...and please post to your wall to help. Eventually, people like this end up killing someone." I also posted the same comment for the second guy. Anyone want to try?

My God, is this going to happen every time a black person, person who is black, person of color, persona de colore, person who paints with water colors, makes the news? He's really Jamaican, He's really African, he's really Irish but he fell asleep under a tanning lamp and now look what happened! Someone said a certain phrase took them out of the story - well, guess what, folks - discussing being taken out of a story will take readers out of a story.

Thanks, Farrell.

Re:Phinnigin. I agree!! Most establishments do not have hot water in the restrooms!!! However, whyRead More can't restaurants install hand sanitizer behind the counter? The Popeye's in Burbank has a hand sanitizer installed behind the counter, but honestly, the employees hardly ever use it, which is why, after a horrible experience at that location last July, I have not patronized ANY Popeye's since!!!
