Chicago Man Nabbed in Ohio on Hickory Hills Bank Robbery Charge, FBI Says

The search for a Chicago man ended at a bus station in Ohio.

Members of the Ohio Violent Crimes Task Force arrested Jeffrey A. Kaplan, 30, without incident last Wednesday at bus station in Toledo, Ohio. Kaplan had been charged in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Chicago on one count of bank robbery on Aug. 1, the FBI said.

According to the criminal complaint, Kaplan entered the TCF Bank branch located at 9357 S. Roberts Road in Hickory Hills on July 26 and approached the teller window. Kaplan allegedly made verbal demands and passed a note demanding money, handing the teller a black plastic bag.

The teller placed all of the money in her drawer and slipped a dye pack into the bag before handing it Kaplan, who left the bank on foot, the complaint said.

The FBI said that a witness saw Kaplan throw something to the ground before getting into the passenger side of a van, which then drove away. After noticing smoke, the witness walked over and found a black bag filled with red-stained money.

Kaplan was identified by members of the public who recognized him from bank surveillance photos on the FBI-run BanditTrackerChicago website, according to the complaint.

The Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force had learned that Kaplan was traveling by bus from Chicago to New York that included a stop in Toledo, where he was arrested on August 15.

Kaplan appeared in court in Ohio where he remains in federal custody awaiting return to Chicago. If convicted of the charge, he faces a prison term of up to 20 years.
