Cops Clear Building Searching for Munchies

Police swarm building on Cicero Avenue in search of gun owner; second man cited for possession of cannabis.

Police evacuated an apartment building on the 9700 block of South Cicero Avenue after finding a gun and cannabis inside a car on June 4.

Antonio Amador, 22, of Chicago, was issued a village ordinance for possession of cannabis after police unsuccessfully searched for the alleged owner of the gun, reports said.

Police received a call of a man in a parking lot armed with a handgun sitting in a Honda Accord at 12:10 p.m. and recovered a 9mm Beretta from the front driver’s seat floor of the car. The gun had seven rounds in the chamber. Also sitting in plain view of the front passenger seat was a nugget of pot sitting next to an unopened Swisher Sweet cigar.

Amador told police the gun wasn’t his but belonged to a guy named “Munchies,” who had gone into the apartment building, according to Amador.

Police circled the building and two teams of officers cleared the common areas and hallways. Several residents told police that they never heard of Munchies, who could not be found in the building.

After being read his rights at the Oak Lawn police station, Amador cooperated with police and told them his story, reports said.

According to reports, Amador told police that he and Munchies were driving to the apartment complex to score a pound of sour diesel—a strain of marijuana. Amador gave Munchies $2,000, and Munchies went into the building to see his contact, the report said.

Before leaving, Munchies dropped a nugget and told Amador to roll a blunt and they’d smoke it when he got back, reports said.

Amador said he called Munchies while he was inside the building, and Munchies told Amador he’d be right down. Munchies never returned with the pot or the money. Amador started to leave when police surrounded his car, reports said.

Amador turned up clear for past charges, but there was no FOID listed for the Berretta, police said.

On the way to pick up the sour diesel, police said, Munchies asked Amador if he wanted to buy the gun. Amador told Munchies he wasn’t interested.

The assistant state’s attorney said further investigation was needed and that possible robbery charges would be pursued against Munchies.

Amador has a July 5 court date.
